“It’s okay.”

I know she means that, but it still twists me up inside.

I don’t know how to continue, so I clear my throat, and I put the seatbelt on carefully.

“We should get on the road before your mates come back here looking for us.”

That makes her smile. Any mention of her mates makes her light up.

“Seth will demand to rush back, but Cass will stop him.”

“You’re sure?” I ask, making her laugh.

“I’m pretty sure. Of course, if I were out here alone, Cass would be rushing right back.”

I smile, but it makes me realize where my daughter is the most secure.

Her mates think she’s safe with me, and that makes me feel good.

I would protect her with my life. Literally nothing else means anything to me.

Trouble is, I’m only a Beta. I’m not super strong or fast or good with a weapon.

An Alpha tried to kill me once, and it was a miracle I survived.

Secret’s safer in her mate’s company than she is in mine.

I should bring her home to them now.

“Let’s get on the road before they start blowing up your phone.”

Chapter Three

Leanne

We park in the Cressidan College lot, where Secret was supposed to be doing her degree before she was outed as an Omega. Now that everyone there knows she’s one of the rarer populus, she’s doing an online course instead, which keeps her safe in her pack’s company most of the time.

I don’t need to worry about her because she has them, but I also don’t want to miss out on any more of her life. Maybe that’s a little selfish. I honestly don’t know. It feels like my world has been upside down for so long that I don’t really know what normal is anymore.

Secret took off her mascara while I drove us out of Silver Lake.

She looks a little tired now that she’s been crying, but that’s all.

Clearly, she missed out on the part of my genetics that makes my face go red and puffy whenever I’m upset. Alphas always seem to look good, so it makes sense if she got her pretty crying trait from her father’s side, not that he ever would have cried over anything.

Seth’s shadow looms over the passenger side of the car before he opens Secret’s door and crouches down to check on her, examining her face and body as if he’s inspecting his mate for injuries.

“I’m fine,” Secret insists, her face flushing a little.

Her perfume starts to come out in his presence. It’s a sweet vanilla frosting scent that I smelled once on her sixteenth birthday, and never again until after her mates out here brought it back out in her.

Makes sense now that Ryan, her childhood best friend, turned out to be one of her mates.

Seth looks like a bigger, scarier version of his half-brother.

It’s a little weird, but really, I’m just glad that they don’t look anything like their psychopath father. I don’t think I could handle being around them at all if they did.

I take off my seatbelt and pick up my purse.
