“Tell me you have your phone in your pocket?” He raises his eyebrows.

I check before I nod. “Battery’s half-full.”

“I’ll call you when I get her to agree to hear you out.”

I feel a little better when he doesn’t say ‘if’.

Echo can be very persuasive when he wants to be.

Clearly, he thinks he can get Leanne to listen.

“Don’t take all afternoon.”

“No promises,” he says, giving me a grin before he darts up the steps and goes inside.

He disappears down that dark corridor, and I find a spot to lean against the wall outside, knowing I’m in for a wait. Omegas can be charming and persuasive for sure, but I doubt the Beta he’s about to attempt to persuade is in the mood for his charms.

Chapter Twenty-Five

Echo

I take slow steps once I’m inside the building, checking apartment numbers so I know where I need to go to find Leanne. I take in long, slow, deep breaths, in an attempt to keep myself calm. The initial burst of need and desire I felt on meeting her was intense, and neither of us need that kind of energy right now. It’s not going to be easy, but I need to make sure I don’t freak her out.

Probably should have worn something less tight and provocative today.

Too bad I don’t really own normal clothes.

Maybe I should have borrowed one of Toshi’s hoodies or something.

I see the numbers on her door and move toward it, concentrating on my breathing.

When I get close to the door, I can’t help looking around as if I didn’t just walk down this corridor alone with no sounds of other people coming up the stairwell behind me.

Habit, I guess. E.A. and Spencer have one thing in common.

They both like to be very aware of where they are and what’s going on around them.

It’s rubbed off on me more than a little bit after a decade of being the glue that keeps us together.

One last long, deep, breath, and I knock on the door.

Softly at first, testing.

I cock my head, making sure I’m visible for her peephole while I listen out for footsteps from inside.

I don’t hear anything. Damn.

I knock a little harder, for longer.

Still nothing.

Slipping the envelope under my arm, I take my cell phone out of my pocket.

I fire off a quick text to Spencer.

Are we sure she came home?

Three dots appear and disappear a couple times before he answers.
