Chapter Twenty-Eight

Spencer

I don’t know what Echo thinks he’s doing going radio silent on me, but the longer I wait, the more anxious I become. Leanne Leto isn’t a random ordinary woman. My Omega might have his charms, but he’s not going to be able to instantly bond with a woman E.A. just riled up with a tactless threat.

She’s probably yelling at him to get off her doorstep.

Or threatening him with some kind of weapon.

It’s the thought of the second option that stirs me into action.

I know E.A. and Echo think Leanne is fated for us, but right now she’s a traumatized person and she’s been provoked. We don’t know what she might do if she’s been pushed too far.

She might not even know.

Darting up the steps to the building’s open entrance, I prepare myself mentally for whatever situation I might be walking into. I need to be calm and cautious. I step into the hallway and glance around, listening for any raised voices.

Nothing. The faint sound of music is coming from one of the downstairs apartments as I pass, but that’s the only obvious noise I pick up on as I head for the stairs.

I walk slow and keep listening.

When I get to the floor Leanne’s apartment is on, I see it straight ahead.

No one’s standing outside. The door isn’t open. It’s not even ajar.

I can see something on the ground in front of it, though.

I stalk over there, and crouch down, seeing the envelope is halfway under the door.

Why the hell would Echo leave this like that if he went inside?

And if he didn’t go inside, where the hell is he?

I tug the envelope out from under the door, and I frown at it.

Still sealed. What’s going on here?

I’m about to raise my hand to knock on the door when it opens from the inside.

Echo gives me a wry smile. “Hey. I thought I asked you to wait outside.”

“You know protocol dictates we never go radio silent.”

He rolls his eyes at me. “Don’t protocol me right now. We’re not happy with E.A.”

“We?” I glance past him, but I don’t see Leanne.

He steps back. “Come in and give our host that envelope. It’s hers.”

I do what I’m asked, stepping into the apartment.

I see Leanne standing in the kitchen area to the right of the boxy little apartment.

The room feels small with three of us in it. I can’t imagine how she feels.

She picks up a mug and sips from it before she gives me a smile.
