She blinks and understanding dawns in her expression. “Oh my God. You mean I should act like a ditz so if I get caught trying to get into that elevator, or something…”

I nod. “We need to establish that early on so no one thinks anything of it.”

“Wow. Okay. Sure. I can manage that.” She nods slowly.

“Just don’t oversell it,” Spencer says. “Play into whatever they already think about you. If you act like a bimbo one second and yourself the next, no one will buy it.”

She looks deep in thought for a second before she says, “I can zone out, make it look like a trauma response. I can warn my boss that it can happen, and what to do if it does?”

Perfect. She’s a natural. I don’t think she even realizes that.

She really was always meant to find her way to us.

I smile at her. “Think about what you’ll do for that. You can work on it and show us later. It should be convincing enough. I’ll research to make sure it comes off as realistic.”

“I’ll look it up, too,” she murmurs, looking deep in thought again.

“That’s probably enough for one night,” I admit, feeling drained.

She blinks at me, her disappointment obvious. “Oh. Well …”

“You don’t have to go home,” Echo tells her. “We can just hang out. Talk. Whatever.”

Spencer nods. “I could use dessert. Does anyone want something from the place down the street? They’ve got cake, ice cream, candy …”

“Sure,” Leanne says. “Sorbet, maybe? Any kind.”

“Cannoli’s,” Toshi says, adding his usual order.

“I’m fine,” Echo says. “In fact, I could use a tea.”

“Bubble tea?” Spencer asks, pulling a face.

“No. I mean the kind I make upstairs.”

“Right.” Spencer nods. “I’ll get the desserts. Toshi, you can look after our girl. I’ll be back in five.”

He leaves, and I suppose I’d better see what Echo wants to talk to me about.

“Goodnight,” I murmur as I walk toward the back door.

“Night,” Leanne murmurs back.

Chapter Thirty-Six

Echo

Toshi can thank me for leaving him alone with our mate later. Right now, I need to know what’s going on with my Alpha, because his emotions have been pretty flat this whole time and I don’t understand why. When we met, and when he shows his love for me, I feel it.

It hasn’t been like that with Leanne.

I know he’s preoccupied with his greatest enemy, and I understand that a lot better than I did before, but it doesn’t explain why he’s cold around our future mate.

Something’s wrong, and I don’t know what it is.

E.A. locks the back door, and then heads straight for the stairs to the apartment.

“Do you have your keys?” he asks me as I start to follow him.
