“I don’t want to go back there,” I tell him. “I want to stay right here, with you. All of you.”

Now that I’ve found them, I can’t imagine having to go back there at all.

I don’t care what their apartment is like, or what the sleeping arrangements are.

They would have a hard time getting rid of me if they decided they didn’t want me around. And I’m not like Toshi. I don’t feel the need to hesitate over what I want. They’ve made it obvious I’m fated to them. I want to be here. I want to be with them.

“I’m so damn glad that you needed a job,” he says.

I guess I might not be here right now if I hadn’t been looking for work. Then again, Toshi was tailing me before I found out this place was advertising.

“Oh, I think E.A. would have found a way to make sure we met even if I didn’t.”

“Well, he does know how to get exactly what he wants.”

Chapter Forty-One

E.A.

For once, the moment the room is doused in darkness I find it impossible to let sleep claim me. My usual nighttime rituals are in place, and I didn’t skip any steps out of weariness. I felt ready to pass out before I lay down, yet now that I’m under the covers and the lights are out, I’m wide awake.

I should have expected this. I treated today like a normal day, and it was anything but.

The woman I discovered weeks ago to be our fated mate is the key to finally capturing the evidence that will incarcerate my greatest enemy is with my pack brothers in the office downstairs.

She’s going to change everything, and despite knowing this would be the case, I’m ill-prepared for the inevitable upheaval.

Fifteen years of investigation, and I’d started to wonder if I would ever get a real shot at justice for my mother’s murder. I’ve spent those years attempting to catch that bastard out on a million different charges. Anything to put him behind bars where he belongs.

Every damn time, the charges were erased.

That’s not going to happen this time.

His friends in blue will be tied up with their own troubles when Leanne has her hands on that evidence, and I doubt any of those low-level dirty cops could make real, tangible human trafficking charges just disappear. Lucky for me, he doesn’t have any higher-ups in his pocket.

There’s a possibility one of his clients might.

I won’t know until I find out who they are.

And I won’t find out who they are until I have that jar sitting in front of me.

I know he has a system, a way to remind himself who he sold to.

It’s not written down. It’s hidden in that jar.

The ribbons he uses to bind the hair and the trophies he takes; they have different colors for a reason. He doesn’t do anything at random. He’s too measured and calculating for that.

I don’t know if I’ll figure out what those colors mean before I have to hand the jar over to the police.

His clients are rich, but that doesn’t mean much.

Most Alphas find a way to acquire wealth quickly.

Cressidan City is full of rich men.

Even if I rule out the families who affiliate themselves with Omega Academies, there are too many potential suspects left over to successfully work through. I’ve tried, and it’s useless. I never find compelling enough reasons to rule any of them out, or evidence that might make them more likely suspects. Rich men are the cockroaches of this city. There are too many to ever be rid of, and if you kill one, another three will appear to replace him within seconds.

Just kidding. I’ve never killed one, but I imagine it’s what would happen if I did.
