I take her into my bedroom and lay her down on the bed.

Reaching out to my nightstand, I run my hand along the cable to the lamp.

When I flip the switch, the room brightens a little around the bed.

She sits up and looks around, as I move to the door and reach out for the living area light switch on the wall just outside. I hit the switch and douse that room in darkness.

Then, I close the door and turn the key to lock it.

I can’t sleep with the door open, unlocked, or even without the key wedged into the lock.

“So, this is your room,” Leanne says, as she gets up and moves over to the bathroom door.

She pushes the door open and glances inside, nodding. “Nice.”

It’s rare that I ever invite anyone into my bedroom.

In the whole decade that I’ve been mated to Echo, we’ve spent ninety percent of our bonding time in the room he shares with Spencer. I only bring him in here when I can’t handle dealing with anyone else. Hell is other people. That doesn’t usually include my pack brothers, but every now and then it does. Echo understands. He even gets it when I need to be completely alone.

I don’t know how Leanne will take my personality quirks.

She seems like a sympathetic person, but she’s also hot-tempered.

We’ll probably rub each other up wrong a bit before we find the best ways to connect.

Until then, I’ll be careful, but I stand by my sudden need to make sure she’s protected.

“Oh, crap,” she mutters. “I left my purse in Toshi’s room.”

“I’ll get it,” I tell her, moving back to the door and unlocking it swiftly before I open it.

I’m not sure how she’ll react if she notices the door is actually locked, and I’d rather not have to explain it until we’ve connected a little more.

It was different with Echo. He enjoys feeling trapped. He likes to be restricted and dominated.

He grew up with so much freedom that he craves discipline in the bedroom.

Leanne is nothing like Echo.

She’s spent too much of her life standing still. Now that she’s found what she’s been looking for, it’s hard to predict what her reactions will be.

I stalk across the living area and into Toshi’s room, where the light has been left on.

It only takes a second to locate her purse. It’s lying open on the bed, next to the clothing she discarded before she came out into the living room and asked if I had a shirt she could borrow.

I see a bottle of pills, and what looks like a set of underwear.

The pills are for pain. There’s a capped toothbrush in the purse, too. Between that and the underwear, I’m guessing she decided she might be staying when she came back here with Spencer and Echo. Most women don’t carry that kind of stuff around for no reason.

I bring the purse with me and switch off the light as I leave the room.

Some interesting sounds are coming from the room next door.

I ignore the temptation to listen.

My mood might have improved a bit, but I have a new mate to look after now.

Toshi can have fun with Spencer and Echo without me.
