“I chopped a great deal of wood.”

“That’s good, right?”

“Yes. I also noticed a breach to the perimeter.”

“Oh, that’s not so good, is it?”

“No, it’s not. It’s quite concerning, but nothing I can’t handle.”

They were silent again. She ate her food but her appetite disappeared. This was a lot harder than she thought it would be.

He was right there and, well, she didn’t know what to say to him.

“I don’t want you to be nervous about us having sex,” he said.

“What?”

“Us, having sex. I don’t want you to be afraid.”

“I’m not afraid.”

“You’re avoiding me.”

“I’m not avoiding you.”

“You’re sleeping in Daphne’s room rather than your own or coming to mine.”

“I’m taking care of her.” Why was she lying? She was avoiding him. She frowned. “The breach in the perimeter. Who is it?” This was an easier subject to talk about.

“I don’t know.” He looked at her. “Are there any other camps that you know about? That your people would have known?”

“None. I was their prisoner.”

“I want to fuck you again,” he said.

“What? The perimeter, huh?”

He chuckled.

Damn, he shouldn’t smile in any way because it only served to make him sexier, which was so fucking wrong. She gritted her teeth. This was serious.

“No, I will take care of the perimeter. I want to fuck you again, Winter. I know we’re from two different worlds, and the first time may not have been the best, but I want to do it again. I want to show you how good it can be.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“Why not?”

She licked her lips, trying to figure out a reason for them to not be together. Her mind went blank. She couldn’t think of a single reason as to why they couldn’t be together but it was futile. “You’ve got to find someone for Daphne, Rocko. Someone who will know what it’s like to grow up as a wolf. I don’t.”

He stared at her. “That’s what worries you?”

“There are a lot of things that worry me.”

“Daphne’s not mine.”

She frowned. She clearly hadn’t heard that right. “What?”

“Daphne’s not my child. I’ve never had a mate. I lied to you.”

“Then who does Daphne belong to?”

“I don’t know her name or who Daphne’s father is. I only know that her mother was dying as she gave birth and begged for me to take care of her and to love her.”

Winter looked toward the crib. “She’s human?”

“Yes.”

“And you didn’t kill her.”

“I know a lot of people have me pegged as some kind of a monster but I don’t kill innocent people. It’s why I will never kill you.”

“She’s not your child?”

“No.”

“I don’t … is that why you let me take her to the hospital?”

“We have a doctor here who knows all about being a wolf, babies, and taking care of us. Nothing about humans. I knew she was sick, and she needed proper care. Wolves don’t suffer like humans do, not at a young age. We’re weak but we’re stronger than your kind.”

“You see, that’s why we shouldn’t ever have sex.” She got to her feet, picking up her plate, and stomped into the kitchen.

“Why? Because I let Daphne go to a human hospital?”

She slammed the food into the bin before dumping the plate into the sink. “No! It’s the single decent thing you’ve done. We cannot have sex again because the first time was a big, giant mistake. We can’t be together because no matter what, it will always be your kind or my kind. I don’t see us as kinds of people or human, or wolves. We’re living, breathing beings. We’re not things. You bleed just like me. You can die.”

“It takes a lot to kill us.”

“So what? Ugh, you’re so frustrating.”

She went to brush past him but he grabbed her and pinned her against the fridge. “We are different, Winter, whether you like it or not.”

“No, we’re the same.”

“So can you smell my arousal? I can smell yours. I know without even touching your pussy that you’re wet for me right now. Your nipples, they’re hard, and even as you deny your need for me, your body doesn’t lie.”

She took a deep breath. “So you have a better sense of smell. Good for you. It’s still not happening.”

“Why? Because you don’t like that I’m right?”

“You’re wrong. Once you’ve had your fill of the human nanny, you’ll move on. I was waiting for the right guy. I won’t waste any more of my firsts on you. I will save myself for the right man. The one who will marry me, love me, and give me children.”

Rocko’s growl filled the air. “No other man will ever touch you. You belong to me, Winter. All of your firsts are mine. No one else will ever get to know how sweet you fucking are.” He slammed his lips down on her, silencing all protest and she couldn’t fight him, nor did she want to.
