Never in my life had I thought I’d find being chased by a vicious, beautiful beast exciting.

But it was more than that. Every nerve in my body thrummed with heightened awareness. Every sound and scent in the forest was amplified. Even the vampire side of me was on board with this, bizarrely doing nothing to fight me or try to take control as I fled through the woods.

No, it loved this just as much as I did, and with each passing second, the rush of running from Ozias only grew stronger, until I was fairly certain I’d come on the spot whenever he caught up to me.

I knew his powers were probably telling him where I was. That really, this was only a game.

But that didn’t mean I wanted to make it easy on him.

Doubling back again, I cast a swift glance at the trees, wondering if climbing was against the rules. Would that stop him from feeling my presence on the earth?

A branch cracked in the distance, shattering my debate and making me freeze like a rabbit who’d suddenly detected the presence of a wolf. But Ozias wouldn’t make a sound, that much I knew. He’d always been so quiet, even before I learned what he actually was.

Before he wanted to hunt me.

But what if he was trying to put me more on edge? Hint that he was coming for me now?

Turning, I cast a fast glance around and then took off again in the opposite direction from the noise I’d heard. Faster and faster, my legs moved, my vampire abilities lending me speed. After all, he never said I couldn’t use those. He only said not to shift or else he wouldn’t?—

He was in front of me.

Gasping, I skidded to a stop. He was in human form, but the barest hint of a shimmer was fading from his skin, making me think he’d shifted to get here. Gods, how fast was his beast?

That low growl rumbled from him, making my core throb.

But he hadn’t caught me yet.

A grin flashed over my face. I darted to the side, racing as fast as I could through the underbrush. A snarl came from behind me, but not one of rage. One of anticipation.

He was enjoying this too.

I ran, pouring every bit of my strength into gaining more speed. Adrenaline pounded through me, fueling ancient instincts that swore I really was his prey no matter how much I trusted this was a game. That a monster was after me, intent on bringing me down and doing the gods knew what with me. Over and over, branches snapped behind me, adding to the rush of a chase that felt less and less like fantasy and more like I was running for my life.

But gradually, the sound of snapping branches grew more distant the farther I ran. Was I truly outpacing him? I couldn’t hear anything anymore.

Warily, I slowed, casting a glance back over my shoulder. Had something happened to him? This whole game was some measure of madness, after all, given that there could be all kinds of predators out here.

The gods-forsaken Voidborn, for example.

I stopped, breathing hard as I scanned the forest behind me. Gods, I was an idiot. What if those creatures came back? What if they were attacking him right?—

A dark blur moved at the corner of my eye, and then suddenly he was on me. I slammed to the ground, the air rushing from my lungs as Ozias pinned me down. One of his hands took my wrists, trapping them above me, while his knees shoved my legs apart. I gasped, too stunned to do more than stare up at him.

His hair was wild. His teeth bared. He still looked like a man, but only until I met his eyes.

Those were as savage as any rabid beast.

Gods, I loved it.

The earth flowed around my wrists, imprisoning them. With rough motions, he ripped my clothes away, and I trembled with the urge to shift, to flee. But that’d be breaking the rules, and nothing in me wanted this game to end.

Cold bit at my bare skin as the last of my clothes vanished, but I scarcely had time to react to it. Swiftly, he pulled me from the ground and flipped me over, putting me on all fours on a nearby slab of stone so that I was at a good height for him and then shoving my legs apart again.

Like water, the rock flowed around my fingers, my wrists, my knees, swallowing them down and then hardening again.

Trapping me in position for him.

His deep growl came from behind me, making my pussy clench with need. I could shift in an instant and escape, I knew. But I didn’t even breathe.
