“I could help.” My voice squeaks as I offer to do…what I don’t know.

“No, I don’t want you involved in this.” He stands up and towers over me. His face takes on an ugly scowl, and suddenly Justin doesn’t look like the soft-spoken artistic guy I know. He looks unhinged and about to lapse into a darkness that he won’t be able to find his way back out of again.

I lean away from him, but Justin grabs my arms and pulls me forward. There’s nowhere else to look but in his face.

“You stay away from my father,” he says, “He sick, vindictive, and being human means nothing to him. He will destroy you for his amusement and not even think about it the next day. He doesn’t care what happens to himself, so why should he care about what happens to you? You are not to go near my father. You will not be helping me by destroying yourself. I don’t need you to save me. Just stay away.”

He freezes and lets go of me slowly, but his steady gaze never leaves my eyes.

“Astrid, do you understand?”

I nod as I rub my upper arms.

“I need you to say it,” he practically hisses at me.

“I understand,” I reply. “I won’t go near your father.”
