“It’s the price of beer, ladies. Either that or you can suck my dick.”

Tracey aims her knee toward his crotch, but she doesn’t have enough room to get enough traction.

He looks down to check and then starts to laugh. “That wasn’t nice.”

The crewcut guy’s shoulder moves back on its own, and Tracey starts forward and almost hits the ground. I grab for her, stopping her descent.

“Hey, back off,” Jaxon says, “Just back off, man.”

“Not your business, freshman,” replies the crewcut guy.

Jaxon gives no shits and sticks his finger in the guy’s face. “You don’t belong here!” he shouts.

The guy is not an Alpha. It’s a different letter on his shirt. The commotion is enough to attract the attention of another guy, who is definitely an Alpha. He pats Jaxon on the shoulder and takes over.

“You don’t belong in my house,” he tells the guy calmly.

The guy smirks. “Heard it’s an open party.”

Alpha guy scowls. “Three seconds, and then I kick you out.”

The crewcut guy looks at the two of them. But Jaxon looks like he’s anxious to drop-kick ass out the window. The crewcut guy backs away and then takes off out the back door. The Alpha approaches us, and his gaze is glued to Tracey. “I’m sorry, ladies. I’m Sam, Alpha’s president. We don’t allow bad behavior here.”

Tracey grins so sweetly. “Thank you.”

Sam steps closer. “Is that a Midwest accent?”

Tracey’s eyes light up. “I’m from Kansas City.” She lets Sam place his hand on her lower back, and then they walk toward a somewhat quiet corner in the kitchen.

I bow my head as my breath returns and then look at Jaxon. He takes my hand, and we lean against the counter in almost the same spot I stood with Asher.

“You okay?” he asks, brushing the hair off my cheek.

It was meant to be a comforting gesture, but it puts me on edge. No matter what any guy does, it reminds me of Monarch, the worst six months of my life.

“I’m okay, thanks,” I reply, moving away. “Are you a pledge here?”

“Yeah, me and the guys,” he says, “You want me to take you home?”

I look over at Tracey, who’s deep in conversation with Sam. He is definitely interested by the way he’s into their conversation. It makes me smile, thinking that she’ll probably be a shoo-in for Theta.

“No, but maybe later,” I playfully punch his shoulder, and he smiles. “If that’s okay.”

Jaxon smiles as he stares into my eyes. “Whatever you need, Charlotte. I’m here for you.”

Chapter 21

Charlotte

Jaxon and I lean against the counter side by side with our arms folded tight. It was super cool how he manhandled that obnoxious drunk like a Hollywood action star. It was real alpha male of Jaxon to make the guy back down like a whipped wuss. Not lying; I’m relieved to have a knight in shining armor show up and toss out the trash. If things had kept spiraling into crap, I would’ve grabbed a beer bottle and used it. But luckily, I didn’t have to risk seeing if I could even kick ass like a masked superhero.

I rub my upper arms while watching Jaxon from the corner of my eye. He’s playing it off as if it’s nothing while a few girls check him out. Just another thing to cross off his list of amazingly badass things to do. I’m sure I thanked him after it was over. I hope he’s not expecting more.

To be sure, I say it again but avoid looking him in the eye. “Thanks. He was being a jerk.”

Jaxon moves in closer. “Not a problem, Charlotte. I’m not standing by and watching some guy prove he’s an asshole.” Jaxon eases closer, and his upper arm rubs against mine. “Look. I’m sorry about taking off the way I did last time,” he pauses a second, “I need space sometimes.”

I shrug. “Space is good. Nothing is wrong with that.”
