Prisha and Wren decided on dressing up as the three witches from Hocus Pocus and recruited Tracey to be their third. Instead of scary and silly, they go all-out sexy, and their lush velvet dresses with the high slits on the thighs blow everything away.

“You three definitely have the legs for those dresses.”

Wren is dressed in purple with a red wig. She smiles and kicks out her leg to show off her killer lace-up heels. “I was told Theta is doing a witch theme. We could’ve been a foursome. But I’m sure Hudson will be cute in his tux.”

I squirm as she says his name. I’ve been wondering what he’ll look like without a shirt. My phone chimes with a message from Hudson to meet downstairs. He’s ready to go to the frat.

“I better hurry. He’s invited to Alpha for the pre-game, and I’m tagging along.”

My steps slow down on the stairs when I see Hudson also dressed as a ringmaster. He looks incredible, dressed in black with a blue satin waistcoat and a fake handlebar mustache, but it’s not what I was expecting. I was expecting skin and not to match.

“You changed your mind?” I ask.

He smiles that smirky grin. “It’s a bit cold to run around without a shirt.” He winks. “Maybe later?”

Teasingly, I shove his shoulder, and laughing, he plays it off. “Don’t get ahead of yourself,” I tell him as we head down the path toward the school gate. All sorts of costumes pass us by, including more witches, but in short skirts, and a guy dressed as an inflatable dinosaur.

We take an Uber to Alpha, and Jaxon comes off the porch when he sees us getting out of the car. He’s also dressed like a ringmaster, and I glare at Hudson until he pays attention to me.

“Why is he dressed like us?” I ask, pinning him with a stern stare.

Jaxon’s costume is slightly different from ours. His waistcoat has a leopard print, and his black shirt is open, showing off the tattoos on his sculpted chest. It’s a cool combination—ink and muscle. I stare at one of his tats, trying to figure out what it is, and maybe I’m staring too hard.

“Want a closer look?” Jaxon smiles, and that smile could melt a cold heart, but mine remains cool. There’s a tiny voice that reminds me not to trust a player.

“Are you going to race away if I look?” I smile sweetly and take a jab.

He tries to laugh it off. “About that night. I had stuff to do. Sorry.”

“Another girl? I’m sure she doesn’t want to be referred to as stuff,” I reply, not caring that Hudson is listening.

“Are you jealous?” he counters.

“Selective,” I reply, walking past him confidently. “You’re like a child in a candy shop filled with blondes, redheads, and brunettes.”

He steps near me and leans in so only I can hear. “I’d like to lick the best one.”

Laughing, I shake my head, and I’m not even angry that he tried. “You are so corny that it’s embarrassing to hear those lines. Again.”

Hudson holds the door open, and I walk into Alpha house toward the living room. Asher is in the corner, setting up his gear—speakers and a laptop filled with extensive playlists for every mood. My mouth drops open, and I turn around fast, almost colliding into Hudson. I glare at him and then back at Asher, who is also dressed in a ringmaster’s costume, except his waistcoat is black. Slowly, I notice that our hats are the same, with different-colored ribbons that match our coats. Hudson offered to help with my costume, claiming he knew someone who had a top hat, but it was a trick, not a treat.

“I thought it was a Halloween party, not a convention,” I quip.

Hudson laughs it off as he enters the room. “We look cool.”

“We look like a group.” I don’t have a chance to say what I want. They trapped me into looking like I’m with them. As if they’ve claimed me. “Any more ringmasters lurking around the house?” I ask.

A tall guy dressed in tails walks in, but I notice immediately that he’s a vampire when he smiles at me. I back into Hudson as the guy leans in way too close. “Hello, and welcome to Alpha. And who are you?”

A look passes between Hudson and Jaxon that I don’t quite understand. They must know the guy, but maybe they don’t quite like him.

“I’m Charlotte.” My tone is cautious.

The vampire holds out his hand. “I’m Kurt. The alpha vampire.”

I smile at the stupid joke and shake his outstretched hand.

“How’s your first year going?” he asks. He leads me away to the drinks and apps table set up in the dining room, and I’m not sure if I should follow.
