“Stop!” Jaxon shouts. “No fighting here.”

“Alpha house, now!” shouts Kurt.

“I’m not a pledge.” Hudson shakes Asher off him. “We talk here.”

I lean back, anxious that they’ll see me though I’m three stories up. Kurt is scum, and I can’t guess what awful thing he’s done to bring this on. Their body language indicates Kurt is still down there though I can’t see him. I press my face to the window, but now they’re talking in low voices. I give up on eavesdropping from a distance and go downstairs.

I step out of our doorway next to the entrance into the bar and slowly walk forward. Kurt didn’t walk away, and when he sees me, he marches straight to me. Hudson rushes forward until he’s in between us and in Kurt’s face.

“Leave her alone,” he says. “Don’t you go near her.”

“Why not? Why don’t you tell her what you did?” Kurt struggles to push Hudson out of the way. “Your boyfriends got me kicked out of school.”

I shoot back with intent to hurt. “For going after helpless pledges? That’s on you.”

He stares blankly at me, and then a bitter laugh tilts his head back. “Why do you think I thought I could have you? You were a task. A game to see who could sleep with you. They all won. What a fucking surprise.”

My cheeks are warm, but I play it cool. “Go somewhere else and lick your wounds.”

I don’t understand what he means by a game but don’t ask. Not now. I won’t allow Kurt to win by being vindictive. I wait, frozen to the spot, unsure if I should stay or go.

Hudson’s rage climbs. “I told you not to talk to her!” he shouts. “You fucked up on your own. Don’t you dare blame anyone else.”

Yelling, Kurt points his finger in Hudson’s face. “You broke your word!”

“No, you fucked up,” he replies. “You have no business being an Alpha.”

Kurt must have figured out the source of the post against him, and this is his idea of damage control. Hudson kept me out of it, but he met with Sam after I told him what happened to Tracey. He said Sam turned pale and then red when he read the screenshots. But a small part of me doubts that Sam is completely clueless. Still, he isn’t the problem—Kurt Ashford is, and he needs to go.

“I got expelled!” Kurt screams. “You got me expelled.”

“No, you got yourself expelled.” Jaxon’s voice rises above Kurt’s. “Do you want me to list the reasons why?”

Kurt glances around at the small crowd forming outside of the bar. The random midday customers have stepped outside to witness the commotion, and more join them. Kurt freezes, realizing what it will sound like if the filthy accusations are spoken out loud. Sometimes the truth is damning.

“You had no business.” His voice drops as he attempts to stay irate. “Watch your ass.”

We stand motionless as Kurt marches off toward the campus, his rage leaving a trail behind him as he mutters curses under his breath. Hudson, Jaxon, and Asher watch me intently for a reaction that I don’t want to reveal. I was a task? Is that the reason they went after me? A game? They have a secret worse than mine.

I rush upstairs to the third-floor apartment and slam the door shut. A stampede of footsteps rushes up the creaky wooden stairs, and I have to step quickly away from the door as it bursts open.

“A game?” I ask, standing in the middle of the room. “You slept with me to get into a frat?”

The silence confirms it’s true.

“We used it as an excuse to be with you,” replies Jaxon gently. “We were just becoming friends. And we were interested in the same girl. We used it as an excuse to pursue you without hurting the others’ feelings.”

“We thought you would only pick one of us,” adds Asher.

It’s not kind that they made a wager to see who would sleep with me. And then I slept with all three. My mind tries to grip onto an emotion, but I’m not sure if I’m angry or sad. I’m definitely hurt.

I fold my arms, but old Charlotte doesn’t return. “I have to be alone for a while.”

I go into my bedroom. I flop down on my new purple couch. It looks regal by the window that overlooks the parking lot behind the bar. My ego wants to tell them off, but my heart reminds me that I’m in love. I lie down and look at the ceiling until I can draw the cracks from memory. I want to cry, but instead I fall asleep.

It’s dark outside when I wake up, and I still haven’t come out of my room. Every so often I hear someone walk up to my door and wait. I wait for them to come in and tell me I’m overreacting, but I’m not this time and they know it. Misery doesn’t just love company; it craves it. There’s a knock on my door.

Jaxon comes in and sits on the bed, putting some space between us. His expression is full of concern as he eyes me with a creased brow. He looks remorseful, but I wait.
