BULLET

Smack.

A soft blow to the head had me jack-knifing in my bed and rubbing at my eyes, ready to beat the fucking shit out of whoever was attacking me with my damn pillows.

“Come on, biker. Time to get out of bed.”

She pulled back for another swing, but I was faster.

I always had been.

I grabbed the pillow, yanking it from her hands and leaping off the bed, going into full attack mode. Each hit made her laugh harder and harder, and I got in at least seven before Mom scolded me from the doorway. “Jaxon, leave your sister alone!”

“Seriously? She started it!” I protested, though it was pointless. Mom was already halfway down the staircase, and Harlyn was climbing out my window and onto the roof.

She paused halfway through it, looking back at me. “You coming?”

Cursing under my breath, I hurried to find a T-shirt and a pair of jeans, not daring to go out there and risk burning my fucking ass off on the metal roofing. It was like ten in the morning, and I could already feel the thick, humid breeze rolling in through the open window.

“Har, it’s like a hundred degrees out here,” I complained as I struggled to fold my body through the small opening. Mine, Bow’s, and Harlyn’s bedrooms all had windows that accessed the reasonably flat roof of our back porch, and while Har had always been a few years older than us, it had never stopped us all over the years from sneaking out there every night after Mom turned out the lights just to breathe in the night air.

When I finally joined them, Bow and Har were already sitting at the edge, swinging their legs and shoving each other playfully.

“I thought you were supposed to get in yesterday so you could come to the party,” I said to my sister as I sat beside her. My head was still a little fuzzy from last night, and I could have done with a glass of water before climbing out here into Hell’s sauna.

Harlyn scoffed. “Yeah, that was the plan, but something happened, and I had to rebook my flight. Dad picked me up at the airport this morning.”

“What happened?”

“Her new boyfriend fucking someone else happened,” Bow growled, rolling his fingers into fists and clicking his knuckles.

Harlyn snapped her head toward my brother. “Oli!”

My lip curled. “You should have cut his dick off.”

“Jax!” she protested, snapping back to me, though her narrowed eyes soon melted away, and the corner of her mouth turned up. “Dad told me that next time I made a mess, he wouldn’t be there to clean it up for me. So the idiot got to keep his stupid tiny dick.”

Like I said before—Harlyn was the definition of fuck around and find out.

And yet, despite how strong my big sister was, she continued to fall for men who were determined to break her.

“Bullet!” my father roared, stepping out onto the back lawn to look up to where the three of us sat. “Kitchen. Now.”

He disappeared as quickly as he had appeared, his boots thumping loudly as he stomped back into the house. Harlyn and Bow both raised their brows. “What’d you do to piss the old man off?” Harlyn questioned, shoving my shoulder.

“I heard that!” Dad’s voice boomed from inside, and Harlyn instantly pressed her lips together tightly.

I turned, lowering myself over the side of the roof instead of heading in through the window. “I’m not sure, but if you hear gunshots, come save me.” I dropped onto the porch just as Bow laughed loudly.

“Duck and weave, brother, duck and weave!”

When I reached the end of the hall, I found not only Dad sitting at the table—a pile of papers in front of him—but also Mom with her hands wrapped around a coffee. I eyed each of them for a moment as I pulled out a chair and took a seat. “What’s going on?”

“I wanted to talk to you about Stella,” Mom said before sipping from her cup. “How serious are you two?”

My father remained straight-faced, flicking through the bills for some of the club’s businesses as I glanced between the two of them. “If you’re about to give me the birds and the bees talk?—”

“I’m not,” Mom insisted, shaking her head vigorously before suddenly pausing. “Though, you are using protection, aren’t you?”
