“Yay!” Presley cheered, and like that, I was forgotten.

“We’ll catch up,” I told them all as they headed for the house.

“I don’t know about you, but I’m starving as well. Let’s go.” Lacie motioned to Luna to follow as she followed behind my brothers and their families.

“I’ll be there in a minute. I just want to call my dad really quick,” Luna replied to my sister, who nodded and followed the trail of people that were going inside.

Once Lacie had gone through the door, Luna turned to me.

“You’re Lacie’s brother?” she whisper-yelled as she motioned wildly toward the house.

“Yes. And you’re her friend,” I replied in a calm manner as if I was explaining to a child. The corner of my mouth twitched as I fought a smile.

“This isn’t funny! She can’t find out!” she vehemently insisted before she covered her mouth with both hands and squeezed her eyes shut.

My spine straightened, and I narrowed my gaze at her. “What the hell are you talking about? Why would it matter? We’re both consenting adults, Luna.”

She dropped her hands and looked at me with her mouth hanging open in shock.

“Max! I can’t tell my friend that her brother is my fuck toy! Oh my God, this is bad.” She began to pace, and I found my temper building. Despite what I knew we had, to hear her call me her fuck toy grated on my nerves.

Gently, I grabbed her by the arms and stopped her. “Luna, she isn’t going to care.”

She shook me off. “I care, Max! I’m fucking my best friend’s brother! What’s going to happen when she expects this to go somewhere? Or what happens when it runs its course and we still need to see each other because my best friend is your sister? If I’d known that, I would’ve never started hooking up with you!”

I stepped back as if she’d slapped me.

“Wow. Okay.” I blinked at her as my ire climbed. “Maybe we should also discuss how you’re ‘not from here’ and yet you’re my sister’s best friend?” My blood was boiling and there was a tightness in my chest I didn’t understand. What I did understand was that she was ashamed of the fact that I was the guy she was hooking up with because of who I was.

“Well, you were only supposed to be a hookup, so it wasn’t supposed to matter! We were never going to meet up with the important people in each other’s lives! It wasn’t supposed to get complicated!” she whisper-yelled.

Working my jaw, I swallowed the strange lump in my throat.

“Well, then I guess we can’t have that. Consider our agreement terminated. Have a nice life.” My lip curled as I spoke.

Not caring about the food or what my brothers might think, I stormed around the side of the house and left through the gate. When my bike roared to life, Straight stuck his head out of the front door. As I jerked my helmet over my head, the questioning frown on his face spoke for itself.

“Something came up. I’ll check in later.”

He nodded, and I pulled away from the curb and rode out of Smoke’s neighborhood. When I hit the highway, I tore down the asphalt, leaving Luna and her shit behind.

What got me was that I wasn’t sure if I was so fucking mad because she acted like I was a dirty secret or because I cared in the first place.

I was so wrapped up in the bullshit that I didn’t see the truck that ran the red light until it hit me.

CHAPTER 9

LUNA

“YOU” — MILEY CYRUS

After Max stormed off, I stayed outside a moment, rubbing the ache in my chest that his words had left behind. Worse, was how I was beating myself up. Guilt ate at me for what I’d said to him.

Because it wasn’t true at all yet panic had set my mouth in motion and what had rolled out was the result of that. However, it took his response to show me.

As everyone around me laughed and chatted, I stared at my phone, wondering if I should call him.

“Everything okay with your dad?” Lacie asked me, and my guilt compounded.
