“Wow. It’s been you two ever since?”

“Just us, until I met you. I felt an instant connection with you and then when we kissed…I knew you were different. You’re more.”

I bite into my cheek as my heart flutters at a ridiculous speed. “You give me butterflies,” I softly confess. “But I’m still married.”

“I want to change that.”

“Me being married?”

“To him? Yes.” He says it like he wants me to be married to him instead, but that’s crazy to even consider right now. I don’t even know his real name.

He’s a stranger.

No, he’s more.

He’s a friend.

“Thank you.”

“For?”

“Saving me today. I was feeling lost, and you made me see things clearly.”

“Oh yeah?” He leans in, one hand resting over my hip while the other strokes along my jaw. My sadness melts away, and while staring into Zeus’ eyes, it hits me. I’m going to be okay. We’re going to be okay, and I have Zeus to thank for opening my eyes to reality. To making me believe once more I deserve better.

I deserve him.

CHAPTER 5

ZEUS

I dropped her off a little way down from her house. She promised she’d be okay no matter how hard I tried to talk her into letting me take her up the driveway and tell her ex-asshole off for treating her so badly for years. The guy is worse than dirt for what he’s put her through; he’s dogshit on the bottom of my boot.

My bike rumbles as I give it gas, heading back home. At least I got Allison’s number this time. When I left the museum, I thought about her all night, and I couldn’t stop chastising myself for not getting it. I wanted to text her so fucking badly even though I knew I shouldn’t, not that it mattered if I didn’t have her number before. When she flashed me her ring at the museum, I didn’t know whether it was a joke at first, maybe a way to prevent men from bothering her…but then she was so shaken up it felt like a slap. I was serious when I said I’m not a mess-around type of guy. When I set my sights on someone, they’re it until I decide it’s time to move on, so to discover she was already taken rattled me.

Pulling into my driveway, I hit the garage remote and walk my bike into my usual parking spot inside. Josiah pops his head in through the garage doorway that leads to the laundry room and kitchen. “Sup, buddy.”

“Hey, Dad.”

“Everything okay? Get your reading done for the night?”

He shakes his head. “Not yet. We did Valentine’s and ate dinner. The leftovers are wrapped in the oven.”

“Sounds good.” I climb off my motorcycle, leaving my helmet behind, and hit the button to shut the garage door on my way inside. Ruffling Josiah’s hair as I pass him. “You took your time writing everyone’s names on the cards?

He huffs. “Of course. Gran wasn’t letting me be sloppy.” He says it so seriously I can’t help but chuckle.

“Go get your reading done and brush your teeth. We can watch our show before you go to bed.” We started the new Percy Jackson remake on television, and Josiah was hooked from the first episode.

“I’ll speed read.”

“How about no. You take your time; comprehension is more important than speed. Remember?”

“I remember,” he grumbles, then takes off in a sprint down the hallway towards his bedroom.

“Mom?”

“Hey, you have a good ride?”
