I felt like an idiot as I said, “I just…wanted to see you. After the interview and stuff.”

He sat on the edge of his desk, making us eye level. “You did the interview?”

“Yeah. It was time.”

“Did something upset you?”

I shrugged. “Parts of it, yeah. I mean most of it, I guess.”

“Were they respectful?”

“Oh, yeah. Doug was great, actually. They were interviewing Brett when I arrived. My father’s chief of staff?” I said since I couldn’t remember if I’d told Py his name before or not. Py nodded. “Anyway, he said some wrong and hurtful things, and they’re basically not going to air anything he said now. They knew he was lying, too.”

“That’s good.”

“It is.”

I wasn’t sure what to do with my hands and ended up crossing my arms as I stared at the floor between his feet. He had huge, paw-like feet despite his hands looking like mine, and his boots reflected that fact. They were very shiny and black and, though I couldn’t see myself while standing, I bet I could if I got closer.

“Did you want to talk about what was said?” Py asked.

I wasn’t sure, but I knew he was trying to be helpful, even though I wasn’t giving him much to work with. I shrugged at him.

Py stood up and started unbuttoning the red jacket of his uniform. Obviously, I wouldn’t mind a show, but… “What are you doing?”

He spread the sides of the jacket open. “Come to me.”

Not one to turn away getting close to his furriness, I walked over and into his arms, getting that hug I’d wanted. Immediately, he adjusted my position so that my face was pressed between his soft, furry pecs. I didn’t resist since it was a nice place to be and… Okay, it was chilling me out a lot because he wrapped one arm around me and held the back of my head with his other hand. Breathing in the spicy, warm scent of him, I felt comforted and protected.

And Py had known that I needed that.

“Hank ooo,” I tried to say.

He relaxed his grip on me. “What?”

I turned my head to the side but stayed plastered to him. “Thank you.”

CHAPTER 9

PYSINA

Sweet little Owen. I rested my chin on his head and kept my hold on him firm so that he would know he was safe. My instinct to give him direct access to my scent and heat seemed to be helping him as well.

I was going to have to tell my parents that they’d been right.

“Of course,” I said after Owen thanked me. It seemed as though comfort or reassurance was not something he was used to having.

Owen sighed heavily. “I think my father invited me up here with him so he could kill me, too.”

It felt as though everything in me paused in horror. His father had wanted him dead? My Owen? How could a parent ever feel that way about their child?

“Goddess, why?” I couldn’t stop my claws from extending as I gripped Owen a little tighter.

He turned to press his forehead against my chest. “We were never the same after he found out I was gay. I was tricked into revealing that because I knew he wouldn’t be happy and couldn’t accept me. I just didn’t realize…” He sighed again and leaned more against me. “I never suspected he’d want me dead.”

I held his face in my hands and made him look up at me. “You are perfect just as you are, Owen. He was wrong about you in every way. Do you hear me?”

He smiled and there was a soft expression in his eyes. “I hear you.”
