“We did. All of them except…”

“They checked him here. He’s clear.”

Oh, that was about me. Someone must’ve searched me while I was out. Of course they should’ve. I was probably a suspect. On the terror watch list. I’d never be allowed to fly again. Passport revoked. And a part of me felt I deserved all of that for how utterly ignorant I’d been.

“Excuse me, Captain,” someone else said in a low voice.

“Thank you. Set it all there,” Langarus said, and I felt something soft rest against my hip. I didn’t want to look and have to meet the eyes of anyone nearby despite being curious about what they’d brought him.

“Does Seiwa have an estimate for when we can use the bay again?” Langarus asked, making me realize we were probably surrounded by people needing him to lead them. Part of me wanted to slink away and let him do his job. The rest of me couldn’t stop clinging.

“Commander Heremod said the floor is too compromised to handle the weight of the shuttles,” that same low voice said, “so he’s had all of the working ones moved to docking collars throughout the ship.”

“When you’re finished questioning the humans,” Langarus said without even a hint of malice, “get them back to the surface.”

I leaned a little more against him. How pathetic was I that I didn’t want to go home? Hiding up here sounded way better than going down there where the press would probably destroy me. Because they had to know something had happened even if no one had told them what yet since that PBS News crew had been with us the whole time. No reporter anywhere in the world would ignore an explosion.

“Well, sir, we mentioned that and… Sir, they don’t want to leave.”

“What?”

They didn’t either? Made sense to me, but I wasn’t a political leader who could milk this for more votes and donations. What was their reasoning?

“They want to continue on with the scheduled events. It’s like they’re even more determined to learn and change minds, sir. I hate to say it, but?—”

“The terrorist had the opposite effect than what he’d wanted.”

Well, that got me looking up in surprise.

He petted a hand over my cheek, and there was so much more than just offering comfort in his beautiful golden eyes. Nothing else should be there—hell, comfort shouldn’t be there—but I got the feeling he wanted me naked and alone with him. I swallowed hard, staring, and totally unsure if I would say no to such a suggestion if he asked.

Someone cleared their throat, and Langarus blinked a few times like he was coming out of a daze. I could relate.

“Tell them that we need some time to reset, but that we appreciate their dedication.”

Langarus reached for that thing beside me, and I realized it was his uniform. Or a fresh one since they’d probably had to remove the old one to stitch him up. It was as he started dressing that I realized he was naked.

Even as lost as I felt, I was still disappointed that I couldn’t see much through the cream-colored fur at his groin. A hint of a sheath for his cock and a tease of a sac below that was all I saw before he pulled up a pair of black slacks that hugged his contours beautifully.

“For the humans on the list,” Langarus said as he buttoned up his red tunic-like coat, “assign a monitor to them. In fact, give all of them a wristband.”

He paused and gazed down at me, looking every bit as official and intimidating as he had when I’d stepped off the shuttle in the landing bay. Right then, I remembered seeking him out when I’d realized what my father had strapped to his chest. Of course I’d gone for the strongest person in the room when I’d been so terrified.

“We’re aware that some of the human visitors were against us,” Langarus said to me. “We invited them for that reason. Obviously, we were unaware of how severe the governor’s leanings were.”

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

He nodded. “You’re going to be accompanied by someone everywhere you go and will wear a device that can monitor your exact location and physical responses, like your pulse. Yes, it’s designed for prisoners?—”

“It’s okay. I deserve it.”

“Do you?”

“I had no idea he could do something so evil.” I gulped back more tears and looked down at my hands in my lap. “Do whatever you want with me.”

I felt his hand touch the back of my neck and the subtle scratch of his claws as he gripped me there. I stayed still and let him.
