I look across at Sebastian, his face scrunched up in peaceful sleep in his crib.

“It’s non-alcoholic, anyway,” I tell him. “You know I’m still breastfeeding.”

He walks across the room and kneels down next to me, still tall enough to look directly into my eyes nonetheless.

He strokes his finger along my lips, making them tingle, and then leans in and kisses me softly, lovingly.

“What was that for?” I whisper.

“For you,” he says, voice husky, a smile on his beard-tickling lips. “I wake up every day scared that finding you was a dream. And then I see you, Kelly, and I realize it’s real. We did the right thing. We followed our hearts.”

He smirks, still dangerous looking despite being my half-tamed husband.

“Well, and other things.”

I giggle, and then turn to the door when I hear what sounds like a million footsteps coming towards us.

“Mommy, Mommy,” Jess yells, jumping up and down on the spot, her pigtails flailing. “Can we go in the pool now please?”

“Sure,” I say, glancing at Kane to see if there was some agreement I wasn’t aware of. “Why wouldn’t they be able to go in the pool?”

“We were waiting, silly,” Harriet says, my freckly princess, with the dark brown, near-red hair.

“Waiting for what?”

“For you, Mommy,” Lila giggles, the youngest except for Seb, with her gap-toothed mouth and always-there smile. “Tell her, Daddy.”

“They wanted us all to jump into the pool together,” he says. “To celebrate your new book.”

I blink, tears budding in my eyes, and then wipe them away and stand up.

“Sure, let me go get my bathing suit.”

I glance at Kane.

“Watch Seb for a minute?”

“Of course,” he says, blowing me a kiss.

But then Lila darts into the room and catches the kiss mid-flight. “Ah-ah, got it, got it.”

“No you don’t, young lady,” I laugh, spreading my arms, getting ready to chase her.

“Catch me, Mommy, catch me,” she laughs.

So I chase my children through the house, the laughter rising, the sun bright, our lives perfect.

And maybe I was wrong before.

Maybe there are words sweeter than THE END.

Happily ever after.

They’re pretty freaking sweet.
