Natalie groaned before making her way to Wrath, who now waited on his own motorcycle behind us.

He held the helmet out to her.

“If you kiss me,” she stated while taking it, “I’ll kill you.”

Wrath only smiled as she slid it over her own dark curls. “I hope that’s a promise,” he replied.

I smiled under my helmet, feeling Alek laughing, too.

And then we were off. I clung to Alek like I did before, my body growing more and more comfortable with the feeling of his warmth. He drove us through the busy streets, weaving in and out of traffic while Wrath and Natalie followed behind.

“Any hints on where we’re going?” I yelled in his ear.

With my chin resting against his shoulder, I felt him smile. “That would ruin the surprise.”

We rode for what felt like hours. The wind whipped through my hair, Natalie’s laughter echoing through the walls of my mind as I gripped onto Alek’s waist, moving and leaning with the bike.

I was so caught up in the absolute euphoria of the ride that when we pulled into a small cafe on the side of the highway, I didn’t blink an eye.

Neither did Natalie.

Breathless and torn apart by the wind, the four of us wandered off the motorcycles and into the cafe.

The building was old and rustic, like the places I read about in my mystery novels. The smell of coffee filled the air even though the sun was beginning to set on the horizon behind us. Red booths lined the wall, paint chipping from it every few feet.

It was cozy.

One of the servers pointed to an empty booth as we walked through the door.

“This is the big surprise?” I whispered to Alek as I slid into the booth beside him. “A café in the middle of nowhere?”

“Trust me,” he whispered back. “It’s worth it.”

I didn’t believe him at first, but when Narcissa, the witch from the lowering of the veil, came into view, I nearly fainted.

“What’s she doing here?” I hissed.

Narcissa slid out of the back booth and made her way over to us. Her hair was pulled into a tight braid over her shoulder and her long, black skirt trailed behind her.

“Who?” Natalie whispered, twisting around.

“The witch,” I said back as Narcissa approached, dragging a chair behind her and seating herself at the end of our booth.

“Relax,” Alek said, running his hand up my thigh. “We asked her to meet us here.”

“It’s nice to see you again,” she greeted. “You’re all looking well.”

“Thank you for meeting with us,” Wrath stated. The smile that usually accompanied his features was long gone, replaced with a deep seriousness.

“I must say I’m surprised,” the witch replied. “I didn’t expect you of all people to want to meet with me.”

“Why would you think that?” Wrath asked with a raised brow. “You helped save my life.”

“Maybe,” she replied with a scoff. “But at what cost?’

We all knew what she meant. She opened the veil. She disrupted the balance.

How, exactly? We still weren’t sure, but we could feel it. Like the smell of rain before the storm, we knew something was coming.
