I didn’t wait for magic fangs to protrude from my teeth. I didn’t try to force it, didn’t try to break skin in any unnatural way.

I used my right hand and pulled his thin black tee shirt to the side, exposing the top of his shoulder, revealing the skin that connected it to his neck.

I kissed the area once, feeling him shiver beneath me.

And then, like the blood-sucking, evil monsters I had grown up avoiding, I bit him.

I half-expected it to be weird. I anticipated Alek not liking it. I was ready to end it as soon as it started in case none of it was as exciting as I had imagined in my head.

But this? This was everything.

Alek let go of any control he had been holding. He moaned my name loudly, loud enough that I was sure it could have been heard over the music, over the blaring bass and random shouts of the Night Raven basement.

That only fueled me more.

And the second his blood bubbled to the surface…

I didn’t remove my teeth as I let my tongue play over the area, flicking up the droplets in a teasing, testing way.

Alek bucked against my hips so hard, I would have fallen from his lap if it weren’t for his hands holding me up.

And Alek’s blood didn’t taste like… blood. It wasn’t the disgusting, copper taste that I had expected. No, Alek’s blood tasted like pure gold, a sweet essence of need I didn’t know existed until now.

I let my tongue flicker over the skin one more time, and then I pulled the liquid into my mouth.

I swallowed.

And I hadn’t even realized I had moaned in pleasure until the sound of utter surrender tumbled from my lungs, catching on Alek’s warm, bleeding skin.

I pulled away in horror, covering my mouth with my hand.

Alek’s head had fallen back, his eyes closed, but he snapped his attention to me the second I pulled away.

“Hey,” he breathed, reaching for my wrist and pulling my hand from my mouth. “Don’t do that.”

He leaned up and kissed me, licking the rest of his blood from my mouth.

“I didn’t know—I felt—”

“I know,” Alek mumbled, speaking against my lips. “I know exactly how you felt.”

He kissed me again, but it was not hot and fiery and full of temptation. It was soft, delicate. It was a deep, needed comfort after what just happened.

After what I just did.

I slid from his lap, wiping any remaining blood on my mouth with the back of my hand.

“I didn’t think your blood would taste any different. That didn’t taste like blood at all.”

Alek put a finger under my chin and forced me to look at him. “It’s different because I am yours, Lyra. Just as you are mine. Remember that.”

Mine.

“Are you sure you don’t want to back out of this relationship?” I asked. “It wasn’t that long ago that we were faking everything.”

His fingers brushed my cheek as he pushed my red hair from my face. “None of it was ever fake for me,” he whispered. “None at all.”
