“You can’t trust him, Lyra. You can’t—”

I held my hand up to stop her. “Do you really think I can trust you? After everything you did to me? After the secrets you kept from me?”

Her expression darkened. “Your father is powerful, but his intentions are not pure. He always has an ulterior motive, Lyra. If you believe anything, believe that.”

I scoffed. “I see why you two were such a perfect match.”

Her eyes snapped to mine, fiercer than before. There it was, that temper.

“Your father and I were not a match. He was a mistake. A big one. Do you know what he said to me when I told him I was pregnant with you?”

I waited for her answer.

“Nothing. Absolutely nothing. I was left alone to raise a child in secret.”

“Because you knew I was half demon? Is that why my blood opens the veil?”

The look on her face was answer enough.

I had suspected it ever since I learned who my father was.

I was different from Theia. I was different from all others who may have had pure goddess blood.

There was a reason my blood could open the veil and nobody else’s could.

“It was my duty to protect the veil from demons, Lyra. How do you think I feel now, knowing my own daughter risked everything to bring it down?”

“Marcus killed Alek. I didn’t have a choice.”

“You always have a choice!” she yelled with fury.

I flinched at the sudden uprising in her voice.

No, this wasn’t about Alek. it wasn’t about the demons, it wasn’t about what happened that night with Marcus. It wasn’t even about my father.

Theia trapped me and brought me here for something. I could feel it in my bones, churning and clawing with unsettling anticipation.

“Why am I here?” I asked again. I lowered my voice, unclenched my fists.

We had been at this too long. This fighting, this cruelty.

Theia couldn’t kill me. Even if she wanted to—which I was certain she did—she needed my blood to protect the veil.

If I died, she would have nothing.

I waited for her to answer. She regained her composure, staring at me again with her arms crossed and her hip cocked, standing in those high heels as if this was just another errand on her to-do list for the day.

“Your father is not the only one who so conveniently slipped through that veil, Lyra. Those with a solid foothold on this side of the veil will have no problem returning. And the dark souls, those tied to the demons, they’ll start crawling back. Some you can see, some you can’t. They’ll tear this world apart from the inside out.”

My lip curled back in disgust. “Why do you care? It’s not like you have anyone here to protect. Not anymore. You’re too damn selfish to care about anyone other than yourself, so why bother?” I sneered.

“There are things you cannot comprehend, Lyra. There is darkness that we won’t even notice until it’s too late, one that will ruin everything.” Her expression hardened.

“So stop it! Close the veil! This is your job, Theia! You disappeared after the veil went down. I took that as a sign that you couldn’t care less about what happens to us.”

“You’d better watch the way you speak to me, Lyra. You have no idea what I’ve been up to, the things I’ve been doing to save the lives of you and your demon friends.”

I halted, dread pooling in my gut. “What?”
