Another hour ticked by.

The demons outside grew quiet. Their low, mumbled conversations slowed before halting entirely. I wasn’t fooled, though. I knew they were still there, waiting in the night for Alek to show up.

If Theia was behind this, she was going to have him killed.

I was sure of it.

Her warning to me wasn’t enough. She would take the one thing I loved in this world and rip it from me, just as I had done to her.

I couldn’t let that happen.

Quietly, I pushed myself up to my feet, stretching my sore, cold limbs and listening for any sound of movement in the rickety house.

Demons might be circling the entire building right now, but they slept eventually.

Theia might not have told them that I was half-demon, that I wasn’t only a weak girl, powerless against them. Although sometimes it certainly felt like it.

I had to save Alek. I couldn’t let him walk into this trap.

I approached the door, careful not to step on any of the broken glass that littered the floor. Silent as ever, I placed my hand on the doorknob.

I wasn’t sure why. I knew it was locked, that they would never leave me in here without locking it.

But something inside of me screamed and chanted with excitement, with anticipation.

Open the door.

So, I twisted it.

And the door actually opened.

Holy shit. Theia must have left without locking it, either too naive or too thoughtless to ensure I couldn’t get out of that room.

I pulled myself together, silently letting the door close back to its original position.

Running wild through a house full of angry demons was not my best option. I needed a plan first. I needed to prepare.

Think, Lyra. What would Alek do?

I walked over to the window, peering through the wooden slabs again and trying to make out anyone who may still be pacing the yard. The moon was high in the sky, allowing me to glimpse the black figures that nearly blended in with the tree trunks surrounding the property.

But something inside me, something that tickled the back of my neck and caused my heart to speed up, told me they were still out there. Still watching.

I counted three, much less than before. A sight that flooded me with relief.

I pushed away from the window and tip-toed back to the door, pressing my ear against it once more. The sound of my breathing filled the air, along with my pounding heartbeat.

Calm down, Lyra. You have to focus. You have to stay calm.

This was the moment that would break me, this was the moment I had to push through if I wanted to make it out of here.

Fear could not paralyze me. Fear could not touch me.

Besides, If Theia had ordered these demons to kill me, they would have by now.

Come on, Lyra. Do not be afraid. She can’t touch you now. This is for Alek.

I took a long breath before reaching for that doorknob and twisting, pushing it open.
