The sound of the gun echoed through the forest and split through my pounding heart, my panting breaths, my body that was growing number by the second.

The demon above me stiffened before falling to the ground beside me in a heap.

I couldn’t move. I knew I should have scurried away, should have gotten out of there as quickly as possible, but I was frozen.

Time slowed down.

Liquid from the demon's body beside me warmed the cold ground under my head.

Blood.

The gun shot again.

Again.

Again.

It wasn’t until I heard Alek’s voice that I finally snapped from my frozen daze.

“We have to go, Lyra!”

Another shot rang in the air.

“We have to go right now!”

And then I was moving, scrambling on the ground, crawling away from that body, crawling past two more, before finding my feet and stumbling in his direction.

“It’s a trap!” My voice felt foreign as I yelled, trying to warn him. “It’s a trap, Alek! They want you dead!”

He mumbled something else, shooting his gun again and again as he walked backwards, guiding me to the passenger side of his car.

He didn’t look at me as he fumbled for the door, pulling it open. “Get in.”

I did.

It seemed like two seconds passed before he was back at the driver’s side, shooting his gun again and again before finally slipping back into the car.

“I need you to hold this,” he said, revving the engine and passing me the weapon in his hands. “And when you see one of the demons, pull the trigger.”

“What?” I sputtered.

“I need you to pull the trigger, Lyra!”

A gunshot rang out, and I heard it clip the side of the car. I screamed. Alek hit the gas pedal.

“NOW!” he roared.

I didn’t hesitate. The window was rolled up, but I knew it wouldn’t matter. I pointed the gun out of my window as Alek spun the car around and I pulled the trigger.

The glass shattered, half of it falling onto my lap as the bullet escaped from the car. I knew I didn’t hit anything, but I didn’t care. I couldn’t even see where the demons were standing, let alone who was shooting at us.

“Again!” Alek yelled. He had successfully spun the car around and was just about to get us the hell out of there.

Another bullet flew by.

I pulled the trigger again, begging my hands to stop shaking.

Someone yelled—more like a roar of anger and frustration—and the house immediately disappeared from view, replaced by the blur of trees as Alek catapulted us down the dirt pathway in his car.
