“You were safe.”

I scoffed. “Clearly.”

I wasn’t that angry at him until now. He was hiding something from me. Something big. I could feel it in my gut, like a heavy rock just sitting there, weighing on me subtly but growing with every second.

“I thought you would be safe in my house with Wrath. I won’t be making that mistake again.”

“Who were those people? Did you know them? Because they certainly seemed to know you.”

A few seconds passed. I wasn’t sure if Alek was debating on whether he could trust me with the information, or if he was trying to piece it together himself.

“Do you remember what I told you about the rival demon packs in the area?”

I recalled the time he had taken me to the carnival, filling me in on everything while we rode to the top of the Ferris wheel. “Yes, I remember.”

“I have a feeling Wrath’s re-appearance is bringing us a lot of attention.”

“So we’re now in danger by whatever darkness was pulled from the other side of the veil, Theia, and rival demon packs?”

Alek didn’t answer. He only glanced at me from the corner of his eye before returning his gaze to the road.

Great.

We didn’t talk for the rest of the drive. I didn’t ask Alek how he knew where to find me, nor why he wasn’t home when I was up waiting for him after the ball.

I didn’t ask him any of that.

Maybe it was because I didn’t want to know the answer myself. Maybe I was in denial, maybe I didn’t want to pull on that thread that was quickly beginning to unravel inside me.

I didn’t want to ask him anything because the truth was going to hurt.

We drove and drove, away from the outskirts of the forest and back into the city, buzzing with so much life and lights that I would never tire of seeing. The city was so alive, so ignorant of the evil and treachery happening within its shadows.

We passed a group of girls all wearing short skirts and heels, stumbling and laughing as they spilled out of a local bar.

My chest tightened.

I had spent my entire life wanting to be normal. Wanting to be anything but this, special and tied up in a fate I could not control.

I thought I had gotten free.

I thought I had rid myself of Theia and the nasty grasp she had on my life.

But if tonight taught me anything, it was the fact that I wasn’t free at all. I was just as entrapped as I was all those years in Theia’s basement.

Only, the chains were not wrapped around my wrists.

They were wrapped around my heart.

CHAPTER 10

Lyra

Alek didn’t take his eyes off me when we got home. The first thing he did was yell through the house, waking up Wrath and Natalie, and explaining what the hell had just happened to us.

He explained Theia’s visit, too, which left them both wide-eyed and stumbling with questions.

But exhaustion clouded my judgment, made my mind foggy.
