This was no easy task we were about to embark on. This would change everything, would end everything.

Then why did it feel so scary?

“There you are.” Narcissa’s voice rang through the trees, shocking me with another wave of adrenaline. “I was starting to think you had bailed on me.” She stepped out from the shadows, making herself visible under the moonlight above.

“If we could have, we would,” Alek joked. “We’re here to put an end to this.”

He turned to look at me, only a second of worry lingering on his features before he recovered, meeting me with those cold, determined eyes of emerald.

“Are you ready for this?” he asked.

No. Of course I wasn’t ready. This was uncharted territory. This was scary and unknown and risky.

But it had to be done. So, ready or not, we were closing this damn veil.

“As ready as I’ll ever be,” I responded. I shoved my shaking hands in my pockets and stepped forward, meeting Alek and Wrath shoulder-to-shoulder as we faced Narcissa.

Nothing but trees and darkness surrounded us now. There was no way to escape, no way to back out.

I trusted Narcissa far more than I expected to. I really did. She did not seem as cold and distant as she did the last time we met. She did not seem clueless as to what happened that day, either.

She knew I had been forced to lower the veil.

She had watched as Alek and Wrath stepped through the other side.

Narcissa looked me up and down with her jaw set. “I cannot promise you this will work,” she said finally. “There isn’t much talk among the witches on how to close the veil once it has been opened.”

I stiffened. “I’m aware there are risks.”

Wrath remained calm to my right, while Alek began to fidget. I kept my gaze forward, locked in on Narcissa as she surveyed the boys.

Her eyes scanned Wrath quickly before sliding over to Alek.

She paused, something in her gaze changing as she took him in.

Only a few seconds passed, but time felt as if it had stopped entirely. I wasn’t sure why, but the hair on my arms raised. Goosebumps showered over my entire body as I waited for Narcissa to say something, to address him.

“We don’t have much time,” she sighed. “The moon will be at its apex any moment now.”

She finally tore her gaze away from Alek, and I released a breath I didn’t know I was holding.

I followed her, with Alek and Wrath at my heels, as we walked into the clearing of the woods. Nobody would find us here. Nobody would witness what was about to unfold, the history that was about to be made.

And if something went wrong, nobody would hear our screams.

“Tell us what to do,” Wrath said. His voice was calm yet urgent, the voice of a king, nonetheless.

“We need a fire,” she started. “Gather the wood. We don’t need much.”

The boys nodded, slipping away to follow her orders without question.

I followed closely behind Alek, watching the way he tapped his fingers against his thighs as he searched the forest ground.

“Hey,” I said as I walked up behind him.

He ignored me, continuing his search around the perimeter of the clearing.

“Alek.” I reached out and wrapped a hand around his bicep.
