I wouldn’t put it past Theia to show up here, even hidden in the middle of nowhere.

“The sooner we close this veil, the better. We’ll deal with Marcus’s son afterward.”

Marcus’s son?

She straightened and backed away as the boys approached, both carrying armfuls of wood from the forest.

“Where do you want this?” Wrath asked.

I didn’t have time to ask Narcissa what the hell she was talking about, and something in her tone warned me against bringing it up to Alek or Wrath.

So I watched in silence, trying like hell to slow my racing heart as Narcissa pointed to the center of the clearing. “Here,” she ordered.

The boys dropped the wood, the sound of the logs banging against one another seemed nearly louder than the constant thud in my chest. My heart rate grew louder, stronger, more rapid with every second that passed.

Even in the cold night of the forest, my palms grew sweaty.

Narcissa closed her eyes for a brief moment, holding her hand out to the logs and mumbling amongst herself, before small flames erupted from the pile.

I sucked in a breath of shock at the sight of the fire.

Narcissa was a powerful witch. Her kind was rare, and she likely had abilities I had never even heard of. Which made this ritual even more nerve-wrecking.

You can trust her, I reminded myself. She’s only here to help you and to close the veil. Closing the veil benefits all of us.

Narcissa had no reason to move against me.

I glanced over at Alek, who still wasn’t meeting my eyes. My chest tightened, the blood in my veins running cold.

Then I turned my gaze to Wrath, who gave me a reassuring nod.

“Are you ready?” Narcissa asked.

One second passed.

Two.

I stepped forward, feeling the warmth of the fire as I met Narcissa’s determined stare. “I’m ready.”

The next few moments blurred together. Narcissa grabbed my hands from across the fire. The heat warmed my skin and brought life back to my numb fingers.

Something electric seized me, running from where Narcissa’s skin touched mine to my spine, stiffening my entire body and flowing down to my feet, reconnecting with the earth beneath me.

I sucked in a sharp breath of shock and stumbled forward, closer to Narcissa.

Then she was chanting, speaking in a language I couldn’t understand, growing louder and louder with every word, every sentence.

Her fingers dug into my skin. She moved her grip to my forearms, chanting again.

The words grew louder, more intense, until they blurred together in the clearing of the woods, echoing off every tree, rattling my bones, and numbing my mind.

I wasn’t sure why, but at that moment, with Narcissa’s fingers nearly piercing my skin and the rush of energy sliding through my body, I thought of Theia.

“Half goddess and half demon, this blood seals the dark souls on their rightful side of the veil, banishing them from this realm, removing them from this world!”

Another buzz of electricity sliced through me.

I didn’t realize Narcissa had moved, had reached for the blade at her hip and placed the tip at my palm. I barely felt the sting of pain over the returning numbness in my hands, the same numbness that now spread over my body.
