I could never look at another woman, not after knowing what her touch felt like. Not after knowing her.

My life would never fucking be the same.

“Are you sure you know where you’re going?” I asked quietly.

Natalie mumbled some sort of insult from the back seat, but I ignored it, keeping my attention firmly out the window. We had been driving for over an hour. Long enough that I was sure Wrath was driving me far away so he could end my pathetic fucking life for good.

“Trust me, brother,” Wrath replied with confidence. “I know a thing or two about witches.”

A pause filled the air. That. That was the type of comment Lyra would typically have some snarky remark to, some stiff reply.

Anything. Anything would have been better than the nonstop silence.

A few minutes later, Wrath pulled off the highway and led us down an unlit dirt road.

“This is where she lives?” Nat asked.

Wrath only nodded. “According to our sources, yes. I’ve had a few of our guys following her for some time now.”

Of course, he had been following her. The house was covered in vines and nearly hidden entirely by trees, exactly the type of house I would have pictured Narcissa living in.

Nobody spoke as the car rolled to a stop.

Nobody spoke as we all got out, following Wrath to the front door.

He knocked twice. We waited. I could hear my blood pumping loudly in my ears as I fought the urge to panic.

Narcissa would help us. She would know what to do.

When all this was over, maybe Lyra would forgive me.

At least I still had that small hope.

“Narcissa,” Wrath greeted as she opened the front door. “We need your help.”

As sudden as our appearance was, Narcissa didn’t seem the least bit surprised. Her eyes quickly swept over Wrath and Natalie before landing on me.

“Yes,” she answered calmly. “You do.”

She said nothing else as she stepped to the side, letting us enter the dark cottage. Wrath moved first, followed by Natalie. Lyra stilled for a moment, hesitating long enough while she watched Narcissa that I thought she wouldn’t enter the cottage at all.

She and Narcissa stared at each other, having a full conversation with their eyes.

I wasn’t a genius, but I could guess what passed between them.

A few seconds later, though, Lyra cleared her throat and walked through the door. I followed.

“I’ve been expecting you,” Narcissa announced as she shut the door behind her. Any filtering moonlight from the sky outside ceased, leaving the dim glow of the candles that littered the small, warm interior. “Though I must admit, I did not expect it would take this long for you bunch to come knocking on my door. Not with what’s at stake, anyway.”

“Why didn’t you tell us?” Wrath asked, glancing around at the shadowy home. “You knew about Alek; you practically warned us of it when we closed the veil.”

Narcissa lifted her chin. Her features were sharp, and her eyes held a certain promise, one that made a chill sliver down my spine. “You did not ask.”

Lyra stiffened beside me, surely biting her tongue. One look at her explained everything she felt about the witch.

“Help us fix it,” I started. “How do we undo this?”

Narcissa’s eyes landed on me again. “You ran from me when I tried to help you, boy.”
