“Oh my. You really are trying to get all the brownie points today.”

“What can I say?” I give a laugh and hope that it doesn’t betray my nervousness. “I’m hoping I might even get lucky.”

Thirty minutes later, I have a freshly showered and dressed Olivia in the car. She seems to have no suspicions about what’s going on. The only thing left in the plan is…

“So,” I begin, pulling out a silk scarf from my pocket. “My one condition is that you wear this on the way there.”

Olivia quirks her brow. “Kinda kinky,” she remarks. Then she grins. “I like it.”

I try not to let her see me wince. I’m gonna have to make up for the big-ass letdown this is going to be when the scarf comes back off. But that’s a problem for Future Reese.

She lets me tie the blindfold over her eyes and test a few times to make sure she definitely can’t see. I don’t think she’ll be able to figure out where we’re going, but I want to make sure that she has no idea where she is or how to get away from there.

Is it fucked up? A little.

But she’ll be safe.

That’s the only thing I care about.

The drive takes a couple hours. We venture further into central Texas, where the land stretches empty for miles and miles with only cows and the occasional horse to keep the grass company.

It’s the perfect place to hide someone you don’t want to be found—or to hide yourself.

I’d know a thing or two about that last one.

When we reach the right gravelly road, I turn off the highway. It takes us ten bumpy minutes before skirting to a stop at our final destination. There’s already a car parked out in front of the small, ranch-style house. A big guy in black jeans and black t-shirt stands on the stoop. He nods my way as I come out of my car, but he says nothing. Good. That means I can get Olivia into the place before she starts asking the wrong kind of questions.

“Are we here?” she asks, her head tilting cutely from one side to another, as if that’ll help her see.

“Yeah. Lemme help you out.”

I go around to her side of the car and pull her out. She’s a little unsteady, so I keep my hands on her. She leans into me and I waddle with her to the front of the house and ease her up the steps.

“Come on, Reese. Tell me where we are!”

“Hold on. Just a little longer.”

I manage to finagle my key out of my pockets and open up the door. Just inside is another beefy mountain of a man, dressed in all black like his partner out front. Is two bodyguards overkill? Possibly. Do I care? Not even one percent.

“Okay… Now, you have to promise not to be mad at me,” I warn, kicking the door closed behind me.

“Why do you say that?” Olivia turns around, her face angled up toward me adorably. I brace myself. I have to remember that I’m doing this because I care about her and that child of ours. I have to make sure that there’s no more incidents like the one back home.

I have to get Holly off our asses.

Then we can go back to normal. She’ll understand when all this is over.

I reach around her head and undo the blindfold. It falls away from her chocolate eyes and she peers around curiously and then in confusion.

“A cabin?” she asks. “That’s… unexpected.”

Then she notices the bodyguard. I can tell when she does, because her eyes widen as she gazes over my shoulder.

“Reese…?”

“Listen.” I put my hands on her shoulders. “You’re not gonna like this?—”
