I quickly flip to the next voicemail. It’s from K.

“Bad news, Mr. Dalton. I brought Olivia to the hospital so she could get checked out and uh… she disappeared. I asked around and no one in the ER said that they’d taken in a woman matching her description. She probably found a way to get a cab or something. I’m driving around the area looking for her.”

I turn my voicemails off and try to get a hold of myself before I fucking combust. Possible miscarriage and now, she’s missing? What was she thinking, running off like that? Or did she run? What if Holly…?

No. I can’t think like that.

I’ll get back to Elliot later. I need to get to Olivia first.

If she’s not at the hospital, then I have a pretty good idea where she probably ran off to. She wouldn’t go back to the cabin. I pull up the tracker app—and, sure enough, she’s at her mother’s.

Which means in just a few minutes, that’s where I’ll be, too.

I shove my phone into my pocket and limp my way out. Dante and Marcus are waiting for me in the hallway. Both look up when I emerge.

“Oh, no,” Dante sighs. “You got a look on your face.”

“What’s the news?”

I steel myself. I’m trying not to lose my shit. Part of me just wants to say that I’m just anxious to get to Olivia. To keep things under wrap and handle it all myself. But I know that keeping things from them this far hasn’t worked out for the best. Plus, I’m working with a busted jaw and one leg less than usual.

It’s time to ask for help.

“Olivia made a jailbreak from the cabin,” I explain in a croak. “Guards said they took her to the hospital and she bolted.”

“Hospital?” Dante asks in confusion. “What’s wrong with her? Did something happen?”

“Possible miscarriage.”

I say “possible,” because I refuse to put it out there that it’s happened. I won’t until a doctor says it to me themselves and even then, I might still have some pushback to give.

“Fuck,” they say at the same time.

“You know where she is?” Marcus asks.

“She’s at her mother’s.”

Dante nods grimly. “Then that’s where we’re going.”

REESE

I wouldn’t be where I am in this world if I didn’t have Marcus and Dante. They keep my dumb ass grounded. The whole drive, that’s what they do. Pop on some tunes, toss around a few jokes. It provides a decent distraction on the way to the truth.

It’s not long until we’re pulling into the driveway. I’m reminded how long it’s been since I’ve actually seen Olivia’s mother.

How much does she know?

Will she even understand?

Can she even understand?

I shove those thoughts into the back of my mind—right next to where I’ve shoved the possibility that Olivia and I lost our little miracle.

“Not gonna be long,” I grit out, hopping out of the car.

“Be here when you need us,” Dante yells after me. “Don’t be afraid to call in the cavalry!”
