He slammed on the brakes, bringing us to an abrupt stop. I flew forward, my hands hitting the dash and the seat belt digging into my neck.

The cars behind us squealed, and I closed my eyes, praying they’d given themselves enough distance so they didn’t hit us. After a few seconds, when nothing hit us, I opened my eyes and let out a relieved breath.

My dad yanked the wheel and worked on getting us turned around right in the middle of the street. He jammed the car into reverse and put his arm on my headrest, looking over his shoulder as he swung us around.

He shifted back into drive and smashed his foot on the accelerator so we peeled out down the road. “It was Sloane’s pack. That bitch. She’s been trouble ever since the start. We showed her every kindness, and she spit in our faces.”

He shook his head as his jaw worked. “I’m going to make sure she pays for that. Mikey has some weird fixation with her. He’s had his eye on her from the beginning. I think I’m going to let him have her once we catch her again.”

I bit the inside of my cheek so hard that blood flooded my mouth. Mikey had been begging for a woman. He had been for a while now. I was pretty sure that he had forcefully taken a few we had held captive but hadn’t been assigned to an enforcer yet. I hadn’t been able to prove it, and even if I could, my dad probably wouldn’t punish him. He was a true monster who needed to be stopped.

The thought of that jerk putting his hands on Sloane even for a second made my blood boil. Red clouded my vision, and I almost didn’t hear my father’s next words.

“They took him too.”

Him? Was he talking about Lincoln?

“Who? Who did they take?” I was glad I sounded genuinely confused. It would help keep my cover.

My dad fisted his palm and beat it against his thigh. “Your brother. They took Lincoln.”

Lincoln was free. Thank Luna.

“Lincoln? Why would they take him?” I hoped my question sounded sincere.

My dad could never know about Sloane’s connection to Lincoln or me. It would compromise us all and make his punishment that much worse.

My dad continued his assault on his leg, and I was sure he was going to have one hell of a bruise by the time we made it back to the house. “Maybe she thought that he was an ally. He did try to help her get away. They spent a lot of time together in his room. You know how women can be.”

I nodded. “I didn’t realize that they’d gotten so close that she would come back for him or send her family to come for him.”

My dad growled. “Neither did I. I won’t underestimate her again or your brother. He’s not my son anymore.” He looked at me and jabbed a finger in my chest. “He’s not your brother either. If you see him again, you are to take him prisoner or kill him. I don’t particularly care.”

My eyes widened despite my best effort. This was bad. I didn’t think Dad would ever want to kill Lincoln until now.

Dad clenched his hand into a fist, and instead of jabbing me again, he punched me hard in the chest. The wind whooshed out of my lungs, making me cough.

“Say it, Sawyer. Say he’s no longer your brother.”

I put a hand on my chest, trying to catch my breath. Thankfully, Dad hadn’t hit me again. He must’ve realized that I couldn’t say what he wanted when I couldn’t breathe. I forced deep gulps of air into my screaming lungs as I tried to control my breathing. I coughed and rubbed my chest.

“He’s not my brother anymore. He’s not a member of our pack. And I’ll do everything I can to hunt him down and bring him to justice.” I met my dad’s eyes and held his gaze.

After a long moment, he looked away with a nod, turning his attention back to the road. “We need to plan our attack. Maybe we go straight there, catch them off guard. They might not even be home yet or barely. They wouldn’t suspect it.”

A wide grin split his face.

My pulse spiked, and my mouth went dry. “Dad, we can’t.”

He glared at me, and I realized that I had spoken up too fast. I needed to think of something, and fast.

I licked my lips and sighed. “They came at us fast and hard the other day. We don’t know how many men they have. More might have come since then. You’ve already asked for reinforcements, right?”

My dad exhaled loudly, making his nostrils flare. “You think we should wait for them?”

I sucked in a deep breath and let it out. “Yes. We underestimated them last time. Next time we go, we can’t let that happen again. It could make us look weak, and those who have been loyal to us, but are on the fence, might not stay that way. Reinforcements are coming. More wolfsbane is coming. Next time we attack, we make sure it’s the last time.”

Heaven help me. What I was suggesting could get my mates killed. It could get Sloane’s family slaughtered. I didn’t want to be the reason she lost another sibling, or worse, one of her parents.
