I lay down next to him, resting my head on his shoulder and breathing in his pine scent. His body trembled, shaking so hard it rattled my teeth. I closed my eyes and pushed calming thoughts at him.

We stayed like that for only a few minutes before he began to stir.

I think I’m ready now.

I sat up and gave him a once-over. Are you sure?

He moved beneath me, and we both rose to our feet. Yes. Come on. We need to get moving. I don’t want to lose our head start.

He stretched, placing his feet out front and moving his chest forward and then backwards before shaking out his rear. He lifted his head and then took off, blazing past me.

I charged after and soon met him stride for stride. We’d both already determined that I was the fastest out of the two of us, but I didn’t want to pass him. He was still hurt, even though he didn’t want to admit it. That wolfsbane had really done a number on him. I kept pace with him, letting him set our speed.

We flew through the woods. The wildlife moved around us, and the birds chirped above. The sun began to peek above the trees, and its soft rays helped to warm me up even further. The leaves crunched beneath our feet, and I breathed in the dewy smell of the earth, letting it help me relax.

Running helped to work out the rest of the kinks until, finally, I was loose and fluid. We ran along the water’s edge for a long time.

So long that I lost track of time, and I pulled up short when Lincoln started to slow. The smell of a campfire wafted on the air, and a brief tang of burned marshmallow. We must’ve been close to the cabins.

Lincoln nodded in the direction we were going. It’s about another half a mile.

He continued at a steady trot, taking the lead and giving me an opportunity to appreciate his wolf form. His wolf was all black, like his hair. It was magnificent and sleek. He moved with a grace that shouldn’t be possible for a wolf of his size.

He must have felt me staring, because he started wiggling his butt as he slowed to a walk. Like what you see, sweetheart?

I darted my gaze away. Stop it.

I don’t mind you checking me out.

I licked my chops. Okay, Romeo, it looks like we’re here. Now what?

Peeking through the trees were the first few houses in the small community.

Lincoln walked slower now. Stay in the trees. Let’s see if we can find someplace that’s vacant.

The first few houses we passed had lights on, and a few had movement behind the curtains. We circled around until we came to a house that had no cars in the driveway and no signs of life inside.

Lincoln rocked forward and then back. He arched his back up, stretching, and then began his shift. This time, it went much more smoothly, and he was on all fours in his human form within a few seconds. I followed his lead, shifting quickly and sitting back on my heels.

I started to unwind my clothes, but Lincoln shook his head.

“Don’t. I bet we can find something better inside, or at the very least, a dryer. That way you don’t have to put freezing, wet clothes back on.”

I stood up at the same time Lincoln did. He looked magnificent. There wasn’t a scratch left on his body. You would never be able to tell that he had been brutally tortured only a few hours ago.

I bit my lip as I caught sight of his magnificent, engorged length. My mouth went dry, and heat flooded me.

Lincoln grinned when he caught me checking him out. He grabbed my hand and kissed the back of it. “Soon, sweetheart. Let’s get you out of this cold first.”

He gave me a gentle tug toward the back of the house. I clutched my sopping-wet clothes to my body, making water drip down my front. I shivered and darted my gaze around, making sure that nobody was watching us.

Nakedness wasn’t exactly something new for packs, but I imagined if people saw us prancing around in our birthday suits, they might call the police. That was the last thing we needed.

Lincoln tiptoed up to the back porch and peered around before putting both his hands on the glass door and peeking inside. He tried the handle first, giving it a firm tug. It didn’t budge, which wasn’t surprising. Mom locked our doors at night before bed, and we lived with a few dozen enforcers.

I shifted on my feet. “What do we do now?”

Lincoln let go of my hand and looked around. He picked up the welcome mat, replaced it, and then brushed his fingers up around the porch light. “Help me look around. They might have a hide-a-key somewhere.”
