My stomach twisted at what I was suggesting. Wolfsbane was a potent and deadly drug for us. Alpha Dane used it weaken his enemies. Part of me felt like we were stooping to his level by using it too.

My dad nodded. “Agreed. The information he provided from the dealer was invaluable. I’d be interested to see if he has more uses we haven’t thought of yet. Get him up and meet back down here in about fifteen minutes.”

I slipped out of his office and made my way back upstairs. Lincoln was still sound asleep with the comforter pulled partially over his face. I went over to him and gave him a gentle shake.

He murmured in his sleep and rolled over so I could see his face.

I brushed my fingers over his forehead and then gave him a gentle kiss. “Wake up, sleepyhead. You can’t sleep the whole day away.”

He blinked his eyes open, and a smile spread across his face. “Have I told you how much I love waking up to your beautiful face?”

I laughed and then gave him a gentle shove. “Come on. It’s time to get up. My dad wants us to help with the wolfsbane. They’ve already made significant progress overnight, but there’s still a lot to do.”

Lincoln grunted as he climbed out of bed. I drifted my gaze over him, my mouth watering. He was as naked as the day he was born.

I pressed my thighs together, but it did little to temper the heat starting to bloom within me. Lincoln’s eyes lit up when he caught me staring, but I shook my head. There wasn’t time for that, unfortunately.

Lincoln closed the distance and pressed a gentle kiss to my forehead. “We’ll spend as much time as we can together later.”

Later. The word hit me like a punch to the face. I had the weight of the world pressing against my shoulders, and I could almost feel myself sinking into the floor. What if there wasn’t a later?

Alpha Dane was coming tonight, and not everyone would survive.

Later wasn’t promised.

To anyone.

Willa let her fork fall to her plate and covered her face with her hands. “How much longer will we have to wait?”

My mom made a hushing noise as she hurried to her and put a hand on her shoulder. “It’s going to be all right. Try to eat if you can. You and the baby both need the strength.”

Erica shoved her bowl away. “I don’t think I can eat either, Mom.”

My mom pushed the bowl back in front of Erica. “You will try. All of you will. We need our strength.”

Jacob wrapped his arm around Willa and scooted his chair closer. “Waiting is the worst, but you’ll make yourself sick with worry if you let it get to you. Eat something. Alpha Kathleen is right.”

I pushed my beef tips around my plate, smearing the gravy across the white ceramic. My belly grumbled. I was a weird combination of hungry and nauseous all at the same time.

I tapped my foot as I stared at my plate. The whole table rattled with my movements.

My mom’s gaze snapped to me, and she pressed her lips together in a tight line. “It’s going to be a long night. Everyone will be better off if they have food in their bellies.”

I jabbed my fork into one of the beef tips and put it into my mouth. The beef fell apart as the flavor exploded on my tongue. My stomach gurgled, and I went in for another bite.

Lincoln got up and helped himself to another bowl. “The anticipation is the worst. I always find it best to try to take my mind off it as much as I can.”

My mom patted Willa’s shoulder and then went to the kitchen door. “Lincoln is right. I should go check on some of the other girls who haven’t been in to get dinner yet. I’m sure they’re just as anxious as the rest of you.”

Willa speared a beef tip with her fork and held it up but didn’t eat it. Her gaze went to Lincoln. “How do you do it?”

He finished spooning his food onto his plate, leaned against the counter, and held up his plate. “I eat.”

Willa laughed, and I covered my mouth as I almost choked on my food.
