I swallowed, darting my gaze to my mom. Her face was pale, and she clung to Erica like her life depended on it. A feeling of dread crept through me. It wasn’t like her to be so…scared.

Keep yourself together, Sloane. You don’t want to start a panic. They’re looking to you. You’re going to be their alpha.

Think!

I pointed to the hall. “Jacob, can you, Willa, and a few others watch the back of the house?”

Jacob inclined his head. He clasped Willa’s hand and led her down the hall. Two teen boys by the hallway followed wordlessly behind them.

I pointed to the floor. “The other point of entry will be the front door. Lincoln and I will stand by the window and keep watch.”

I turned on my heel and marched on wooden legs to the window. I pulled the drawn curtains back just enough so I could peer out. The white of the light coupled with the pitch-black night made it impossible to see anything. I turned back to the room.

Lincoln stood on the opposite side of the window, his gaze finding mine.

I let my hand fall limp to my side. “Everyone should keep their eyes and ears open and be on full alert.”

I pressed my lips together. “See something. Hear something. Say something.”

There were a few murmurs of acknowledgement, and more people nodded.

“Good.”

I turned back to the window and pressed my forehead against the cool glass. It did little to cool my too-hot skin. The glass fogged up where my breath puffed against it.

I lifted my sweater and rubbed at the window, but it only smeared it.

My head tingled, and Lincoln’s voice filled my mind. You’re doing good.

Yeah?

The curtains shifted as Lincoln poked his head around to look at me. He gave me a small smile. It’s okay to be nervous. You got this. Just follow your instincts.

I gripped the curtains tighter and shuffled my feet over the carpet. It caused enough static to make my hair stand on end.

I briefly closed my eyes, drew in a deep breath, and let it out slowly. Then I planted my feet and shifted just my eyes into those of my wolf’s.

I scanned the perimeter, but no one was out there. Not yet. It sounded quiet. If there was fighting, it wasn’t close to the house.

I pulled on the link that connected me to my mates. Sawyer was drawing closer, but I wasn’t connected to him the way I was with Lincoln. It was fuzzy where he should be, like he was blocking us out.

Lincoln sighed. He needs to focus on what’s going on out there.

I licked my lips and let my forehead hit the window again. I know. I still don’t like it.

Neither do I. But he’s alive, and he’s safe.

But he wasn’t safe. We were in the middle of a full-on battle.

I narrowed my eyes as light flickered in the trees. It grew brighter as it got closer. I squinted and put my hand by my brows as the high beams of a car blinded me.

The light shone on me like a spotlight zeroing in on its target.

A scream lodged in my throat. The car sped up, on a crash course for where I stood.

Eighteen

Lincoln
