“Mom, what’s going on?” Hannah says from her bedroom doorway.

“Go stay with the boys in their room. Lock the door!”

I can’t stay inside the house when my sister might be in danger. Grabbing a butcher knife from the block on the counter, I go into the garage, where the first thing I see is Cam. She’s backed up against Dom’s Escalade, a cell phone in her hand and tears streaming down her face.

Frantically, I look around the large three-stall garage. There’s a man flat on his back near the front of the garage. Dom is crouched with his knee on the man’s back and his hands pinning his neck in place.

“Oh my God!”

“Stay back!” Dom yells, putting a hand out as I start to rush over.

I stop, looking at Cam. “Is this him?”

She nods. “I’m on the phone with 9-1-1. The police are on their way.”

“What should I do, Dom?” I’m shaking, even though he has the situation under control.

“Stay where you are, both of you. He’s not going anywhere.”

Jake moves his lower body, trying to dig one knee in and get leverage. The muscles in Dom’s upper body tense as he presses his knee into Jake’s back harder.

“I don’t want to choke you, man, but I will if I have to.”

“I have a knife,” I call out. “I’m not afraid to stab you, you piece of shit.”

Jake goes still again.

It feels like it takes an hour for the police to arrive, but it’s more like five minutes when two marked SUVs pull up at the same time, an officer emerging from each one with a gun drawn and pointed and Jake and Dom.

“Sir, you need to stay flat on the ground,” one of them orders. “Put your palms face down on the concrete and do not move. It’s very important that you do not move at all.”

He makes eye contact with Dom. “Does he have any weapons?”

Dom nods toward the side of the garage. “He had a gun. It’s over there.”

My stomach drops. My sister was in serious danger. Thank God Dom heard her screaming.

The other officer picks up Jake’s gun.

“I want you to slowly move off of him,” the first officer tells Dom. “Put your hands up and move away from him.”

Dom does, coming over to me. The officer puts handcuffs on Jake and Cam races over into my arms.

“I thought he was going to kill me. I really did.” She’s sobbing hysterically. “I came out to take the trash out and he was waiting outside the garage.”

Tears sting my eyes as I hold her close.

“You’re okay,” I say softly. “It’s over.”

It takes almost an hour for Cam and Dom to be interviewed by the officers, with Jake sitting cuffed in the back of one of the vehicles the whole time. I’m relieved when the officers finally pull away and he’s out of sight.

He’s facing some serious criminal charges and the officer said Cam and Dom will need to testify in the trial if Jake doesn’t plead guilty. They’ll do whatever is needed to put him away for as long as possible.

Zane slept through the whole thing and Hannah is playing games with the twins in their room when I go up to check on them.

“I didn’t say anything to them,” she says in my ear. “I just told them I wanted to play and I had the door locked before they woke up.”

I hug her close. “You’re such a brave girl. I’m so proud of you.”
