“Or I’m sure we can find another way to spend the day,” he finished with a smirk.

A smile tugged at the corners of her lips as she agreed. “I thought we were going to get to know each other better.”

“And what better way than sex?” He grinned, making her laugh. She knew he was right.

“All right. I’ll be there around noon.”

“Sounds good. I’ll see you then,” he said before pressing a lingering kiss to her lips and touching the brim of his hat.

As he walked out the door, she couldn’t wait for their plans later. But there was also a small feeling of apprehension in the pit of her stomach. She hoped she wasn’t setting herself up for a broken heart.

On Monday morning, Cody walked into the barn and saw Levi chatting with the other men. After discussing plans with him and the group, they all got down to work. Cody could tell that Levi was fitting in well.

Later, he drove to Hartland to talk to Gray about arranging for Ash to deliver feed. He knew he could just call Ash himself, but he thought it might be faster if Gray did it. The cold weather would be moving in soon, and he needed to make sure he had enough feed for the bulls.

Cody parked his car at the sheriff’s department parking lot and made his way inside. He glanced at the display case on the wall before finding the room he was looking for.

In the lobby, he smiled at the woman working behind the counter.

“Hello, can I help you?” she asked with a friendly smile.

“I’d like to speak with Gray if he’s available.”

“Is he expecting you?”

“No, I just need a—”

“It’s alright, Jeanie. This is my brother-in-law, Cody Haines. Cody, this is my dispatcher, Jeanie Edwards.”

“Nice to meet you,” Cody nodded.

“You too.”

“Come on in my office, Cody. Please hold my calls, unless it’s Vivian.”

“Yes sir.”

Once Gray got in touch with Ash, arrangements were made for feed to be delivered later that day. When he got back to the ranch, he told Levi about the delivery and to have it stored in the silos.

As he sat in his office in the house later, he glanced at the clock when his stomach growled. He hadn’t eaten since this morning, so he decided to head to the diner. He called Levi to ask if any of them were hungry and they gave him their orders.

Pushing the chair back from the desk, he stood, strode to the kitchen, picked up his hat, and walked out the door. Maybe he’d stop in to see Addison before heading back home. He grinned thinking of Sunday afternoon when they spent it in bed. He still owed her though, and he was looking forward to that.

After parking in the diner’s lot, he entered the restaurant to see it packed as usual and took a seat at the counter.

“Hi. What can I get you?”

He glanced up to see a pretty brunette smiling at him. Was he crazy or was there a lot of beautiful women in the areas?

“What’s your name?”

“Lanie Donovan, and you are?” She held a coffee carafe up and he nodded.

“Cody Haines,” he said as he put his hand out for her to shake.

“Nice to meet you, Mr. Haines.”
