“Nine.”

That was outside the TOD window, and even if “Cat Lady” confirmed seeing Kaitlyn, it didn’t mean that she and Navarro hadn’t left. Or even that Navarro was home in the first place. “And who is Cat Lady?” Amanda asked on a sigh, hating the moniker.

“The bat who lives across the hall.” Luis scrunched up his face. “Never bothered to remember her actual name.”

“I see.” Trent tapped the tip of his pen against the page, leaving little blue dots in its wake. “Did you let yourself in, Kaitlyn, or did Luis?”

“I did,” Luis said.

“Can anyone confirm you were home, besides Kaitlyn?” Amanda stiffened her posture, her attention fixed on Luis.

Luis let out a puff of air. “Not that I know of.”

“You must realize how this looks,” Trent said. “No alibi for the time of her murder, and you have motive. I would have felt extremely cheated being dumped after my girlfriend made it rich.”

Luis licked his lips, met Trent’s eye. Unspoken, man to man, it had been a blow to his pride.

“She probably spoiled you with nice things, fancy trips…” Trent poked at the festering wound. “And all that was gone. Just like that!”

“Fine,” Luis hissed. “It sucked all right, but I didn’t kill her.”

“Yet, you went right there,” Trent volleyed back.

“That’s been your implication all along. I mean, two cops—”

“Detectives,” Trent corrected.

“Whatever. You show up at my door, asking where I was when my girlfriend was killed.”

Amanda held back the urge to insert ex-girlfriend, letting Luis have that pass. “A question you can’t apparently answer—or prove.”

“Me. I’m the proof,” Kaitlyn squeaked.

“And how do we know we can trust your word, Ms. Avery?” Amanda watched as her words impacted. They had Kaitlyn biting on her bottom lip and staring blankly across the room. “We were told you have a key to Felicity’s house,” Amanda picked up the questioning, directing these words to Luis.

“I used to. She had mine too, but when we ended things, we gave them back.”

Again, Luis was sticking to the story that the relationship had ended mutually.

“You should stop wasting time on me,” Luis pushed out. “I didn’t kill her, but there are lots who could have.”

She recoiled. “Like who?”

“Flick had some deranged fans, I tell you. But what do you expect? She did write about murder. Heck, some psychos are probably out there imitating her work right now.”

Trent stilled his pen on the page.

Amanda was thinking on Luis’s words too. Imitating her work…

The crime scene had been rather unique considering the stab to the heart and the Queen of Hearts playing card.

I didn’t kill her, but there are lots who could have… Felicity Kelley’s latest novel was a bestseller with a vast audience. Had Felicity’s killer been trying to recreate a scene from it?

NINE

Amanda shifted her stance, wishing she had a place to sit. “Deranged fans. You think one of them killed her?”

Luis shrugged. “I mean why not? Just don’t ask me for any names.”
