Page 48 of Her Last Words

Luis flailed a hand. “She said she’d moved on.”

“With another guy?” Amanda feigned surprise.

“Yeah. She wouldn’t tell me who.”

“Ouch! Seeing the woman you care about with another man…” Trent winced. “That had to hurt, drive you a little insane.”

Again, Amanda sensed that Trent’s words were more personal than just for Luis Navarro’s benefit. She was with Logan and in a happy, committed relationship. Trent kept quiet about his dating life, and she had no clue if he was seeing anyone special.

“It did piss me off, especially while she was standing there accusing me of cheating while she was doing the same thing.”

Amanda resisted a smug smile. “So, you knew about Kristopher Black?”

Luis shook his head, not in denial, but clear aggravation.

“Is he why you were screaming in her driveway? Did you leave matters at that?” Her question was loaded with the implication that he’d taken things further.

Luis paled, and his mouth gaped open. He looked from her to Trent and back. “You really think that I killed her?”

Amanda shrugged. “I mean it’s possible, right? You had motive.”

“I didn’t have motive!”

“She didn’t want to be with you, she wanted to move on. You couldn’t take no for an answer.” Amanda laid out the accusation and watched it strike.

“Listen, I didn’t kill her. You have to believe me.”

“Not in the habit of extending blind faith,” she kicked back, crossing her arms.

“Well, you need to prove I did it. I don’t need to sit here and prove my innocence.”

“You told me how to access Felicity Kelley’s phone, didn’t you?” she asked him.

“You know I did.”

“You haven’t denied knowing about Kristopher Black, and you could have easily read the messages between him and Felicity.”

Luis shoved back into his chair and grimaced.

“There are a lot of texts missing from a conversation between Felicity and Mr. Black. Did you delete them?”

His charade melted from his expression. “Fine. I knew about him.”

“It must have made you crazy.” Amanda sat back slowly and gestured toward Trent.

“Assault and battery, five years ago. Two years’ probation,” Trent said evenly.

“Shit.” Luis raked a hand through his hair. “I wasn’t guilty then either. That bitch hit me and was gearing up to take another swing when her drunk ass lost balance and she fell down, hit her head on the ground.”

“Blaming the victim, that’s how you want to play this?” Trent seethed. “Though it is what abusers do.”

“I’m not an abuser, and I’m not a killer either. Maybe I need a lawyer.”

“Up to you.” Amanda gestured with open palms.

“No, nope, I don’t need one. I didn’t do anything wrong.”

“All right, then. Let’s continue,” Amanda stated calmly.
