Amanda had Sheldon Lowe set up in Interview Room Three. She even saw to it that he had a bottle of water—whatever it took to set the man at ease. She even offered him something from the vending machine, but he’d turned it down.

While he sat in there, she and Trent watched in silence through the two-way mirror from the neighboring observation room. If Trent was like her, he was contemplating how things could have turned out much differently. Thankfully, no one had been hurt.

Malone slipped inside the room. “Luis Navarro’s been released, but you’re already looking at someone else. Talk about line ’em up, rack ’em up. I also heard you two had a bit of an adventure.”

“And the day’s still young,” Trent muttered.

“Happy that it all ended well.” Malone flicked a finger toward the glass. “That the man responsible for the high-speed chase?”

“That he is. Name’s Sheldon Lowe, and he’s now our prime suspect in the murder of Felicity Kelley,” Amanda said.

“Fill me in…”

Amanda told Malone how Sheldon had come to their attention.

“He ran at the mere mention of her name? Guy sounds unhinged for sure.” Malone rubbed his beard. “Good call bringing him in.”

“He didn’t leave us any choice after he took off like he did,” Amanda countered.

“True enough.”

“We’re going in now, but feel free to watch.” Amanda brushed past Malone, and Trent followed.

Amanda cracked the door to the interrogation room, and Sheldon called out, “I need to get back to my bookshop.”

“That’s not going to happen, Mr. Lowe,” Amanda said coolly, as she dropped into a chair across from him. Trent sat next to her.

“I’ll be robbed blind.” Sheldon groaned while sweeping his hands nervously through his hair, the chain on the cuffs he still wore dangling.

She was short on empathy for the man who could have gotten them killed. At the same time, her job was to serve and protect the people of Prince William County. She couldn’t exactly stand back while one of its citizens was robbed. “No one else is working there right now?”

“No. Please, just let me call Cynthia. She’ll take care of things. Please.”

“Who is Cynthia?” she asked.

“She works for me at the store.”

“We can call her. She in your contacts?” Amanda held up his phone, which they had confiscated when they brought him in.

“Yeah, she’s in there.” Sheldon gave her a passcode to unlock the phone, and Amanda selected Cynthia’s name.

Soon after, the line was answered by a woman with a young-sounding voice. Amanda put the call on speaker.

“Ma’am, this is Detective Steele with the Prince William County PD. Are you Cynthia—” She looked at Sheldon for the last name.

“Barkley.”

“Sheldon? Is that you?”

“It is. Please just get to the bookstore ASAP,” he said.

“Where are you?” A good mix of concern and curiosity marked her voice.

“Mr. Lowe is helping us with a case right now, Ms. Barkley,” Amanda said. “But if you could get to the store, as he asked.”

“Ah, sure. But, Shelly, when will you be back?”

“Just lock it up for now,” Sheldon told her.
