“You asked for it. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

“This is still my book!” I shouted while typing. “I’m the one who publishes the books!”

Minutes passed as I waited for his reply. What could he possibly do? I was still the writer. I swore I could hear his deep chuckle sealing my fate as the words appeared on the screen. I. Killed. Cap.

I gasped, reeling back in my chair as I stared at the three words that took a wrecking ball to my soul. This couldn’t be happening.

Why would you do that?

The cursor blinked over and over as the minutes ticked by. Then, slowly, the words appeared.

Because I can.

You have one hour or another character dies.

Freaked out, I shut down my computer, wringing my hands as I paced the office. What was I going to do? These characters were my life. They were everything to me, yet a secondary character was holding them hostage to get his way. I couldn’t stand for this. They were my books, dammit. I would not be dictated to.

I sat down and turned my computer back on. I may lose a few characters in the end, but I would win and make Rob rue the day he ever tried to mess with this author.

ROB

The horror of seeing a large chunk of concrete fall on top of me was merely a nightmare this morning. Now that a new day started, the real battle would begin. I had to hope that all my comrades now believed me and would go along with my plans.

Yes, it was a little insane.

But if it worked, it meant freedom for all of us.

I walked into the IT room, ready for war. “Becky, what do you have for us?”

She spun around in her chair, staring up at the ceiling as she popped bubbles from her gum. At my voice, the bubble popped and she inhaled the gum, choking on it. She jerked forward, gasping for air as she struggled to breathe.

I rushed over, kneeling at her feet. “What is it? What can I do?”

She pressed her hands to her throat, pointing at it.

“I don’t know what to do! I’ve never actually saved a life before!”

I started to panic, unsure how to proceed. I hadn’t even seen others do this. How was I supposed to help? I stood and slapped her on the back over and over again, but nothing helped. I ran from the room, screaming and waving my hands in the air. “Help! Help!”

When I got to the end of the hall and no one came running, I ran in the other direction. “Somebody help! Man down!”

Where was everyone this morning? The phone! I needed to call someone. I ran back to the IT room, halting when I saw Becky sprawled back in the chair and not breathing.

“Oh, crap! I killed Becky!”

I ran over to the phone and started pressing all the buttons. Giulia had never written how I called out. She always said I picked up the phone and called someone. I didn’t know any numbers to dial! The phone squealed in my ear and the line went dead. Wincing, I set down the phone and held my head in my hands.

“What the fuck happened in here?” Knight asked, storming into the room.

I glanced over at the dead woman in the chair and shrugged helplessly. “She…choked on a piece of gum.”

He stared at Becky for a moment, then quickly pulled his gun, pointing it at my face. “What the fuck did you do?”

I held up my hands, practically pissing my pants. That looked like a real gun. I was under the impression that when Giulia wasn’t writing us, everything was fake. I didn’t know how to dodge a bullet!

“I didn’t—I swear. I walked in and she was twirling in her chair and chewing gum! She just choked!”
