“Susan is just a name!” Kate shouted. “Look at me. My name is Kate, but I’m nothing like Giulia describes me. I’m…stupid!”

“Wait, she wrote something,” Maggie said, pointing at the screen and laughing.

“If only I was bigger? Oh, fuck that!” I snapped, typing out a reply. “Ha! Take that.”

Beaming with pride, my face dropped as she typed out, “Baby, it shouldn’t, but it takes a long time to get to China in a row boat.”

I turned beet red, turning to face all of them. “This means war.” I typed out my reply and again, waited for her response.

“Yeah, an ocean liner,” Cap snorted. “That’s a good one.”

I didn’t bother turning around. I didn’t need to see his smug face. He was just acting like this because unlike me, he actually got laid in his books.

Her response was better than I could have hoped for. “This is still my book! I’m the one who publishes the books!”

“You know what you have to do,” Knight said, handing over a knife.

“You want me to kill myself?”

He shrugged. “She can’t control you if you’re dead.”

I felt a large hand come down on my shoulder and Cap’s chuckle in my ear. “Well, we all have to go sometime.”

Without thinking, I spun around and…accidentally slid the knife right into Cap’s chest. He stumbled back, staring at me in disbelief. “You…”

“Oops,” I said, pretending it was an accident. I’d never wanted to murder anyone before, but I hated that everyone felt I was expendable. I guess they’d pushed me too far.

Cap fell to his knees, then to his side in a heap on the floor. Blood pooled from his body, and if this was a book, everyone would be panicking.

“Nice,” Cazzo muttered. “Way to keep cool under pressure.”

“Oh, keep your panties on. He’ll be alive tomorrow. Just like Becky,” I said, gesturing to the corner.”

“You killed Becky?” Coop shouted.

I winced, forgetting the two of them were together. “I didn’t kill her. She choked on her gum and I didn’t know how to save her.”

“With the Heimlich Maneuver,” he shouted, rushing over to her. “How—Why is she all contorted in the chair?”

“Well, she sort of fell out and I had to move her back. She’s actually quite heavy.”

“More like you’re a wimp,” he argued.

“Hey, can we focus on the problem at hand?” Knight snapped. “Giulia is waiting for a response.”

Walking back over to the keyboard, I typed out the one thing I knew would get to her. I. Killed. Cap.

“Why did you type that?”

I turned and faced my fellow characters. “Because Giulia has always been quite clear that Cap is her favorite. It’s his book cover. Apparently, the guy is hot. And in her eyes, there’s no one better, which is why he gets all the best storylines.”

“I don’t know,” Hunter scoffed. “She did end the series with GoodKnight. Basically, the entire book was about him. I’m not sure she could get much more preferential in her treatment.”

“Very true,” Cap said, lifting his head off the ground.

Gasping, I stepped back, staring at the man I had just killed. “How are you alive?”

He looked at me like I was crazy. “We’re characters in a book. Did you really think you could kill me?”
