I sighed, running my hand over my bald head. “Just…Knight stuff.”

She chuckled at that, knowing good and well that Knight had the power to drive me insane.

“What did he do this time?”

I wasn’t sure I wanted her to know the specifics. Lucy wasn’t like the other women around here. Sure, she wasn’t the same woman I fell in love with, but she also wasn’t her sister, packing guns for Thanksgiving instead of clothes.

“You know Knight,” I went with. “He gets something in his mind and can’t let it go.”

She walked over to me, running her hands up my chest, purposely distracting me the way only she could. “I think I know something that could help.”

“Yeah? The kids are upstairs.”

“I don’t mind if they walk in.”

I paused, pulling her hands from around my neck. “Um…I know we’ve never really discussed this before—and I didn’t think we had to—but the kids walking in on me fucking you should not be something we’re okay with.”

She chuckled, patting me on the cheek. “That’s not what I was talking about, but it’s good to know we’re on the same page. Come on.”

She grabbed my hand and dragged me into the kitchen where piles of papers were stacked on the table haphazardly and her computer had about twenty browsers open.

“What exactly am I helping you with?”

“Figuring out where I want to go to school.”

I pulled her to a stop and tugged her back into my arms. “Why would you go back to school?”

“Because I want to brush up on a few things.”

She tried to walk away, but I pulled her back with a chuckle. “Why would you need to brush up on a few things?”

“Well, it’s sort of helpful when you want to teach.”

Again, she tried to walk away, and again, I pulled her back against me. “And why would you go back to teaching?”

“Because it’s what I’ve always wanted to do.”

“You did it.”

“Right, but now I want to do it again,” she said, giving me a funny look.

“You already have a job.”

“Yes, working at a sex toy shop has always been my dream,” she retorted. “However, I somehow think teaching will be more fulfilling.”

“And where were you going to apply?”

“The same school I taught at before,” she answered, as if that was no big deal.

“Wait, you want to not only go back to teaching, but also go back to the school where you were nearly killed?”

She had the audacity to roll her eyes at me. “That was years ago. Hardly anyone who worked there before is still teaching. Besides, the kids don’t need me around the house all the time. I need to do something or I’ll go insane.”

This was quickly spiraling out of control. I couldn’t allow her to just…go be a teacher. That was insane. “What about the whole fear thing?”

“What fear thing?”

“You know, people following you around? After everything that’s happened?—”
