“I know,” he smiled. “God works in mysterious ways. I never thought that was my path until I was shown the light.”

“And Kate…”

“She was on a humanitarian effort when we were attacked. She still had your number, and she knew Maggie worked here. The moment she made that phone call, those women were geared up and flying down to save our butts.”

“You were a preacher,” Sinner said again.

“Minister.”

“Excuse me,” I smiled at Knight, pulling Sinner and Hunter away from the man. “What the fuck is going on?”

“Agreed. There’s no way Knight is a minister. They can’t have sex,” Sinner said.

“That’s priests,” Hunter corrected. “And I think it’s more strange that Knight would give up killing to preach the word of God.”

“Except, he didn’t give it up,” Rocco frowned. “He was never a killer.”

I glanced around the room. Something was really off here. There was no way this was our new reality. We just had to find the one thing that would show us the way.

“What’s on your mind, Cap?”

“I have a feeling we’re stuck in some sort of dream state we have to work our way out of.”

“A dream state,” Hunter nodded. “That makes perfect sense,” he said sarcastically.

“No, think about it,” Rocco joined in. “Our worlds are turned upside down. But if you think about it, there are red herrings everywhere.”

Sinner looked up to the sky, checking for birds. “Uh, I think you need your head examined. There are no red herrings in sight.”

“Dumbass, I wasn’t talking about birds. There are signs everywhere, clues that will lead us out of this hell if only we could figure them out.”

“Okay,” I nodded, liking where he was going with this. “Knight is the obvious one. He’s a preacher, which means that…”

“Which means what?” Hunter asked.

“Fuck, I don’t know. How about Lola? She keeps glancing at us weirdly. She winked at me in the conference room. She knows something.”

“Yeah, but what?”

“We should just ask,” Sinner said. “Think about it, if she’s really a guide of sorts, then she’ll know how to get us out of this.”

“He’s right,” Rocco agreed. “She was the only one who couldn’t see what was happening at her house when Cap was giving birth. And now she shows up here like she knows something’s fucking with us.”

I took a deep breath and walked across the gym toward her. When I got closer, I saw she was sparring with Maggie, and she was kicking Lola’s ass. I whistled for a timeout, but they didn’t listen. Probably because I wasn’t the boss any longer.

“Play up the injury, Cap,” Rocco whispered.

I rolled my eyes and crouched over in pain. “Oh, the pain! My…”

“Finger,” Sinner whispered.

“Heart!” I shouted. “It’s…pumping really fast. I think this might be it.”

Maggie jumped down out of the ring and crouched by my side. “What’s wrong?”

I held my head, acting like it would explode. “There’s just so much pain.”

“I thought you said it was your heart?”
