Page 53 of Playing With Fire

He nodded dazedly. I just needed a few more seconds before I made my move. Wolf wasn’t in place yet. Lola and I took out one vehicle, but there were still more coming at us. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Cap slide down the truck, falling sideways. I glanced over my shoulder and decided it was now or never.

“Lola! Cover me!”

I bent over and hauled Cap over my shoulder, then took off for the RHIB. “Just hang in there, Cap! Maggie’s waiting for you.”

“She’s not going to make me have her baby, is she?”

I ran hard, pushing past the pain in my back. I gritted my teeth as Cap bounced on my shoulder. I would not let my forties get to me like this. I was still the same badass I always had been. Sure, the years were starting to wear on me, but I would not give in and let life get away from me.

But even as the bullets flew around me, I could tell I was just a second slower than usual. And slow people got dead. I was just about to the RHIB when I flung Cap from my shoulder and tossed him inside. Screw being gentle. I just wanted to get out of here in one piece.

Spinning, I pulled my gun from my side holster and started firing. Wolf had us pretty much covered, but even with the firepower we had, this wouldn’t be a clean getaway.

“Lola! Now!” I shouted.

She nodded and pulled a grenade, tossing it as far as she could, then ran for her life. It was enough to cause a distraction, but not to get us clear. I fired off round and round, refusing to get in the RHIB until everyone was safe inside. My body jerked as a bullet pierced my shoulder. Gritting through the pain, I adjusted my stance and kept firing. Then I heard it…the sound of something large coming our way.

My eyes widened as a tank rolled into the clearing. The gun was pointed right at us. Turning, I flung myself into the RHIB as I shouted, “Go, go, go!”

Wolf tossed me his gun and grabbed the wheel, turning us quickly to get out of there. We heard the fire of the gun and took cover, praying it wouldn’t hit us. When we didn’t even hear a splash, I sat up and looked at the destruction on land. The tank had fired on the men chasing us, blasting them to smithereens.

“Holy shit,” Rocco said, staring at the chaos. “They fucking did it.”

“Did what?” I asked. “Who are you talking about?”

He grinned. “Who do you think? That there is the work of a sinner.”

“Fucking hell,” I rolled my eyes. “You didn’t think to tell us that?”

“I wasn’t sure it was them.”

“Wolf,” I snapped. “Let’s go pick up our comrades.”

“Aye, aye, Captain.”

“I’m not your fucking captain,” I muttered. Nodding to Cap, I asked Rocco, “What do you think?”

He was just starting to examine him. “What the fuck did you give him?”

I shrugged. “I went to the local village and described what happened. They put something together for me.”

“And you didn’t think to ask what was in it?”

“They didn’t exactly speak the language.”

“Then how did you tell them what was wrong?”

“I played charades with them.”

“Man, I would kill to see that,” Lola smirked.

“Not as much as I would kill you if you saw it,” I retorted.

We pulled alongside the shore and Wolf killed the engine. Sinner and Hunter popped the hatch on the tank and came out grinning. “Man, did you fucking see that?” Sinner shouted.

“Got a front row seat,” Rocco shouted back.

“We came driving out and saw them firing at you. At first, I had a little trouble getting the gun in place?—”
