“Not a robot. I’m just not interested in having some kind of bonding ritual with you.”

“Would it really kill you to try and fit in a little?”

“Yes.”

I stomped after him, getting really pissed off now. “You know, if you would just?—”

He held up his fist and crouched low.

“Oh, that’s great,” I snapped. “Pretend we’re about to be attacked so?—”

He turned and lunged at me, slapping his hand over my mouth as he took me to the ground. Glaring at me, he signaled there were four tangos.

I rolled my eyes at him, but he pressed his hand harder against my mouth. Okay, it was possible we actually were under attack. I doubted he would lay on me for any other reason. I gave a tight nod and he rolled off me.

We both got to our feet, staying low as we spotted the men dressed in nothing more than some kind of jungle underwear. And all of them were carrying machetes.

“What’s the plan?” I whispered.

Knight slowly turned and glared at me. “Don’t get dead.”

I nodded. “Good plan.”

It was a shit plan. In fact, it was missing all the basic elements that determined what a plan was. No beginning, strike, or ending of a plan. It was…a goal. But I didn’t have time to discuss that with him. He started moving, keeping low as he rushed through the undergrowth.

“Shit, I guess that means I have to follow.”

I hurried behind him, wincing as he ran flat out, tackling the first guy to the ground. I wasn’t sure why he didn’t use a gun. It would have been more efficient. I chased after him, yelling as I ran out into the open and tackled the second guy. He rolled me, his large belly nearly squishing me in the process. He pulled a dagger from God knows where and swung at me.

Wide-eyed, I rolled away from him, jumping to my feet in a desperate attempt to get away. Growling at me, he slashed through the air with the machete, backing me up until I was against a tree. I ducked at the last second, stepping out from under the machete that was now embedded in the tree. He jerked the handle as I pulled my gun.

“Enough of this silence crap.” I pulled the trigger, ending the battle before it got out of control. And in the seconds that followed, I realized why Knight had opted for hand to hand combat. My eyes widened as I heard the warrior cries in the distance. Knight looked at me in disappointment, shaking his head as he pulled his own gun and finished the job.

“You just couldn’t handle a little one-on-one action,” Knight muttered.

“He’s huge!” I said, pointing at the man on the ground.

“And you’re fully trained to take him on.”

“Sorry, we didn’t train for machete fighting in the military.”

He picked up the machete the other man was fighting with, running his finger across the blade. “It’s nice.” He stared at me expectantly.

I picked up the machete laying on the ground at my feet and shrugged. “I guess. Are we fighting the rest of them too?”

“No, dumbass. I’m waiting for you to find the weed.”

“Oh, right,” I cocked a grin at him. “I sort of forgot about that with all the large men rushing us.”

He still stared at me.

“Right! I’ll get on that.”

I hurried off through the trees, looking for anything that even resembled weed. I could hear the cries in the distance growing louder. I didn’t have much time.

“Sinner!” Knight called.

“I’m working on it!” I scanned the ground as quickly as possible, hoping what I found wouldn’t turn out to be poisonous. The last thing Cap needed was another thing to potentially kill him.
