“As you like. I’ll just be glad to see you having some well-deserved rest.”

“Fine, I’ll go, but only because you’re making me.”

“I’ll happily take the blame if things fall apart when you’re not here – which they won’t. Give me a bit of credit here.”

Liv chuckled. “Alright, I’m going. Thanks, Dad.”

On the way home, she stopped by the florist for some more sunflowers. It was time to have the conversation.

“Liv!” Juliette exclaimed in delight. “You’re home early.”

“Yeah… my dad convinced me to take some time off.”

“That’s excellent. Do you want to do lunch? I have some water boiling for pasta.”

“Pasta sounds delicious. I got these for you.”

Juliette kissed Liv on the cheek as she took the flowers. “Thank you, they’re beautiful. Let me just go put these in water.”

Liv followed her through to the living room and perched on the edge of the couch. “Juliette, come sit for a moment.”

Juliette happily crawled into Liv’s lap. “I’m glad you’re home.”

“Me too. Juliette… please don’t freak out, now… but I think my dad knows.”

Juliette stiffened. “Knows? About us?”

“Don’t worry, he’s not going to rat us out.”

“Did you say something to him?”

“Of course not! You know I’d never do that.”

“Then how do you know?”

“I suppose I don’t know for sure, but judging by his behavior, he at the very least strongly suspects. But we’re ok, I promise. If we had told him outright, he’d be obligated to tell Laura, but I know how his brain works. Given that he has no actual proof, he won’t see the point in confiding his possibly wrong suspicious to Laura and just causing a lot of trouble for everyone.”

“Are you sure?” Juliette sounded positively panicked and Liv tightened her arms around her, stroking her hair soothingly. “I’m sure. If he was going to say something to her, he would have done it already. We’re fine, I promise.”

“Ok.” Juliette pulled in a deep breath. “Yeah, ok. You know him better than I do. If you say we’re fine, then I believe you.”

“You know… it doesn’t have to be like this.”

“Of course it does. What other option is there?”

“You could come out to your mom.”

“You know that’s not an option.”

“Actually, it is. Sweetheart, I know you find it scary, but you don’t have to be scared. I’ll be right here with you. It’ll be ok, I promise.”

“You can’t promise something like that, Liv! It won’t be ok and you know it!”

Liv was trying to remain patient, but Juliette’s closed-mindedness wasn’t making it easy. “I truly believe that your mom will accept you with time, but even if she doesn’t, it’s better to have her know the truth than believe a lie, regardless of whether that means she’s in your life or not.”

“Easy for you to say! Your dad accepts you – you’ve never had to make a decision like this!”

“There’s no reason to shout, Juliette. We can discuss this calmly.”
