We both sat stunned, staring at each other. His chest was coated in white powder and judging from the feel of my face, it was all over my skin now.

“You dumb fuck,” he said, but he was cackling with laughter. “You just blew about five grand of profit.”

“Oh my God,” I said, chuckling as I sniffed and wiped at my face. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” he assured me. “But you need to wash that shit off. I’ll clear this up, you hit the shower. I’ll bring you some clothes.”

“I’m sorry, man,” I said as I got to my feet. “Seriously.”

“It’s fine,” he said, his tone still thick with humor. “Fuck, I needed that laugh today.” He shook his head. “Upstairs. Now.”

I trudged up to his office, which had an ensuite, and stripped down before heading into the shower.

By time I’d finished scrubbing up, I realized that my fingers and lips were tingling. I’d never done heroin before, but I had a bad feeling that my streak was over.

“How you doing?” Eddie asked, bursting into the room.

“Five by five,” I lied.

“Well, there are some clothes on the counter for you,” he said. “They might be a little big, but you’re such a short fuck I didn’t have anything in your size.”

“Piss off,” I said. “Hey, Eddie?”

“Yeah?”

“I might need a pass on cutting for the rest of the day...and a ride home.” I turned off the water and reached out to grab the towel from the bar next to the shower.

“Why?” he asked slowly.

“I think I’m stoned,” I admitted.

“Damn it.” He chuckled. “You’re such a dumb ass.”

“Yeah well…you asked me to be here,” I reminded him.

“I didn’t ask you to sneeze into an open brick of heroin, though.” He blew out a sigh. “I’ll be in my office,” he said, before shutting the door behind himself.

As I stepped out of the shower and dried off, I realized that other than Kenny, Eddie was the closest thing I had to a real friend in the cartel. It was really going to suck if I had to be the one to take him down.

I’d do it, because friend or not, Eddie was a criminal who’d done some pretty bad shit with the GSD. But he’d never done anything to me, and that made it a little harder to wrap my head around.

Maybe now that Griffin and I were going to be spending time together, I could get some distance from the guys in my immediate circle, and that would give me the perspective I needed.

Griffin. He’d said he’d call me that day. I wondered if he might be willing to come babysit me for the evening.

It was as good an excuse as any to see him again. Not that I was looking forward to admitting what had happened. But any reason I could find to keep him near me was worth a little embarrassment.

Chapter Eleven

“So, let me get this straight,” Griffin said, staring down at me from where he was sitting next to me on my bed. “You inhaled pure heroin and ruined five grand worth of my product?”

“Okay, stop,” I said, rolling my eyes. “Just stop being the Prince of Detroit for a minute and be the concerned friend who hopefully brought me Taco Bell on his way over.”

“Well, I am the Prince of Detroit,” he reminded. “As such, I’m not your Uber Eats driver. If you want food, I’ll order you something.”

“I do want food,” I assured him. “I want a Gordita and a Mexican pizza and two soft tacos and a bean burrito and a blue Mountain Dew. And another bean burrito. And a cinnamon twist.”
