“I’m sorry, okay. I liked kissing you. Obviously I see you as a woman,” he muttered.

Lenny sat there with her knees drawn up and her head canted, a slight smile clinging to her full lips. “I accept your apology.”

“Well? You got anything to say back?” Burke asked.

“Like what?” Lenny asked.

“Like an apology for ignoring me since the dance.” He ran his hand through his thick crop of chestnut-colored hair. “I didn’t like it. It made me feel poorly, and I felt like I did something wrong.”

“You did do something wrong,” Eliza enlightened him. “You just apologized for it.”

Wow, she was good at this. She could probably do this for a living if anyone would pay for her to be the middleman of their arguments.

“Eliza,” Garret whispered.

“Huh?”

Her unwilling husband twitched his head in a come hither gesture that had her second-guessing her place directly between Lenny and Burke. Oh. Right. They probably needed to work through their own stuff. She only tripped one time as she made her way to where he was setting up both of their bedrolls.

“We’ll give you two a minute,” Garret announced, grabbing Eliza’s hand.

“Wait, I want to hear the rest of it,” she whispered, straining her ears to eavesdrop.

“You have interfered enough, you little hellion.” He let off a chuckle as he led her into the woods.

“What are you laughing at?”

“The sight of you flying through the air like a fuckin’ squirrel trying to punch Burke.”

“All of you should be afraid of me. I can be very violent.”

Garret snorted.

“Sir, stop laughing at me. I’m very worked up and ready to fight, and—”

Garret kissed her.

Just like that. Just blurred, he moved so fast. He pinned her against a tree and silenced her with his lips.

And then he did something that felt utterly scandalous!

He pushed his tongue into her mouth.

He put…he put…he put his tongue into her mouth, once…twice. He was gentle about it, lapping at her, and as wild as this felt, she actually loved it. He tasted good, and her middle grew hot in response to him.

Garret squared up to her and pressed her more firmly against the tree, angled his face the other way and kissed her even deeper.

She was allowed to touch him. No one was here to see their improperness. It was just her and Garret out here, and he was riled up. She could tell by the growl rattling his chest. She placed her hand over the sound, and her hand vibrated with it.

She should be scared of him, right? He wasn’t human, and she’d just accepted it, no fear. And here she was under his touch.

The sound of talking reached her ears on the wind. Garret disengaged their kiss, tossed a narrow-eyed glare around the tree, stooped, and scooped her up. Folded in his arms, he carried her so easily, as if she weight no more than a bedroll. Powerful strides drove them deeper into the woods. She slid her arms around his neck and held on tight as he took her through thick brush, and then suddenly he swung her around and pressed her back against a tree again. Only this time, his kiss was rougher, and deeper. It was hungrier. She lost her mind and let off a groan, and he pressed every inch of himself he could against her.

She should feel trapped, but she didn’t. She didn’t feel trapped at all. She felt free.

Her body was on fire, reaching for him, but she didn’t know what to do. Only that she wanted to touch him and be even closer to him. She wanted to touch his skin!

She pulled at his shirt, untucking it completely, and then ran her hands up his stomach.
