“Nah. Worst I ever did was beat up a vampire or two. At school.”

“Really?” She laughed. “I’m tempted to give you Matteus’s address.”

“I’d be delighted to oblige.”

There was a long silence, then Shona asked, “But really, what is your bad karma?”

“Leaving my family, my parents. Not letting them know for months where I was. Not coming home or contacting them nearly enough.”

“Like you said earlier, you had your reasons.”

“Yeah, they seemed like good ones at the time, but as you get older, you need to rethink, realize it’s not all about you.”

“So will you spend a lot of time in Motham?”

“A fair bit, I think. Hence the plan to?—”

“Buy an island.”

“Yeah.” He laughed. “You okay with doing the groundwork on that for me? I’m going to have my hands full with business stuff while I’m here, and then I have to fly back to Selig for an awards night.”

“Sure. No problem.”

The sky spiked with lightning again. “I think there’s more rain about to roll in,” Tor mused.

“Looks like it.” He saw her yawn. “Tired?” he asked.

“Yes, a bit.”

“Then it’s probably time we both got some shut eye.”

“We’ll sleep just inside the cave, that way we’ll avoid the rain, even if the wind changes direction,” Tor explained. Shona eyed the space and did a mental calculation. It was a very small cave, there’d be no choice but to lie close together.

Her pulse accelerated as she watched Tor shuck off his leather waistcoat. “I’ll make up a bed for you,” he said.

“What about you?”

“After years of prospecting in below-zero temperatures, I assure you, lying on the floor of a cave is luxury.”

She watched as he folded one of the towels to make a pillow, then laid the other out on the ground and placed his waistcoat over it. “Your bed, ma’am.” He swept a big hand, gesturing for her to lie down.

There was nothing to do but oblige.

Shona lay there, rigid as a pole as she sensed him lying down next to her. Within seconds she could feel the heat of his body radiating into her back.

“Goodnight, Shona.” The words were very close to her ear, a deep rumble that made her feel safe—and more than a little turned on.

“Goodnight, Tor.” She snuggled down on his waistcoat. It smelled of him, deliciously sweet, musky and male. Closing her eyes, she tried to chase sleep and soon heard Tor’s low grunts and snuffs. Was he asleep already? For some reason she felt miffed by that. She reached behind her tentatively and suddenly her hand met the hard muscle of his ripped abs.

“What’s up?” he growled out of the darkness.

Shona’s hand sprang back. “Nothing, I— um, was just checking.”

He laughed, low in his throat. “I’m here. You’re safe.”
