“Get out of here,” he grumbled, swallowing his own smile, “before you burst into fucking song.”

“Love is good… Love is great,” Ebony chirped as she sashayed to the door. “And these pics are going to get so many hits on social media.”

Ethan threw himself down at his desk and buried his head in his hands.

“Hello Min, how is everything going?” Adina Thrimble’s voice trilled down the phone.

Min huffed a sigh. How on earth could she tell Adina that her business arrangement had turned into one hot mess?

That she nearly rode a dragon’s tail to orgasm last night, pleaded with him to take her virginity, and that ever since, she’d been a whimpering mess of need and sexual frustration.

“Great,” she lied through gritted teeth. Glancing in the mirror on the dresser, she decided she looked like a crazed ventriloquist’s doll with that fake smile plastered on her mouth.

Fake smiles for a fake date.

No, not fake—not for her at least.

Adina’s melodic voice brought her back. “I’ve been following you both in the media, out and about together. I have to say you make it look very real. I must commend you on your acting prowess.”

Min groaned inwardly. “Yes, we’ve… worked hard on it.”

A little more working on it would be welcome.

“Well, my dear, you are doing admirably, and after the gala ball you will be free.” Min’s heart dropped like a stone. That was only three weeks away. So little time left with Ethan. “Hopefully there won’t be a visit from the Council of Towns before then, but they do like to spring them on people, so be prepared. Their visits can be challenging.”

“In what way?”

“Oh, they’ll check on everything. Go through your private belongings, usually in the middle of the night.”

“I see.” Min gripped the phone tightly.

“Don’t worry, given how much you’ve been in the limelight, they may take that as proof enough.”

“Hopefully.” Min winced. The next set of photos would more than put them in the limelight. The spotlight more like.

“Don’t hesitate to call my office if you have any questions or concerns.”

“No, none, it’s all going fantastically.”

“Good, good. Must dash, I have another call coming in. Goodbye, my dear.”

“Goodbye, Adina.”

Min sighed as she put the phone down. Sadly, there was nothing remotely fantastic happening between her and Ethan.

She’d woken this morning to find a note from him on the dresser, saying he thought they should put a little distance between them. That it would allow them to get back into their professional roles.

Well, oof.

What a slap in the face.

And now the day stretched empty in front of her, her head ached from the champagne she’d drunk, and her pussy ached from frustration.

Suddenly she knew where she needed to be. She needed to be at the Westerly, to ground herself among familiar things, the shelves of musty old books, her garden, with the birds singing in the trees and the spring flowers in bloom, and Gingerbread asleep in the snug, with a beam of sunshine on his back.

That would bring some sanity back to her brain. And body.

Min pulled her shoulders back and exited the room.
