Then Ren’s eyes widen. I can see the fear paralyzing him at a sudden sight - sudden realization. But I can’t see what he sees.

“Get back!” He screams.

My love emerges from out of the wreckage, mere feet in front of me. I can almost touch him.

A chunk of metal, conjured from nothing, emerges from out of his torso, and his eyes go white, as he crumples to the ground.

“Did you really think that would work?” Alistair asks.

He smiles wickedly at me.

I scream Caspian’s name, hoping it will rouse him. With everything in me, I just want him to be okay.

CASPIAN

My love is mere feet away from me - I can feel her reaching out from me. I long to feel her sweet caress, but mostly, I just want to make sure she is safe. From the looks of the venom they injected in her, she does not have long left.

Rory’s a good deal more powerful than I thought. We had a formula for taking out a few of them, but when their numbers grew beyond what we could control, we were overwhelmed.

From behind me, Ren’s voice, grating and throaty, roars out.

“Get back!” He screams.

I feel a blade unlike everything I am familiar with cleave through me. Before I can process what is happening, I am on the ground. The ashes of our friends who died for our cause and our enemies who died for chaos litter the red rocks of the cavern floor, and I can feel my energy straining.

Desiring nothing more than to look my assailant in the eyes, I try to gather my energy and look up. Was that a spiritual weapon? I can feel light energy paradoxically ripping at my innards, as the ghost-like blade pulls free from my torso.

I look up to confirm what I already knew. Alistair stands above me now, blade at the ready.

“Did you really think that would work?” He asks me, laughing. “Funny thing about magic. Sometimes, it’s a free getaway, and sometimes, it’s a holy sword, wielded by your enemy.” He chuckles. “Either way, you’d be a moron to underestimate it.”

He looks up at Quinn, who stands immediately before me.

She screams out. I hear her pain, but mostly I hear how desperately she clings to life - how much energy it takes her even to speak. And she’s using it all on me.

I cannot let her die here.

“I’ve got big plans for you, darling,” Alistair says now, looking at Quinn. “I was just going to let you all die now, but it feels like a waste.”

My fist clenches, and the pain coursing through my body intensifies. He wants to take me out of the picture - to kill me here, and pry what I’ve already claimed from my undead hands.

Alistair moves closer to Quinn, lightly caressing her face. I can see her disgust and utter horror, even from my place on the ground.

“How would you like to join me in unlife?” Alistair says. “It might seem like immortality is everything, but it’s gotten quite boring. You could make it all the more interesting.”

I cry out, using every ounce of energy within me, as she did for me. I pull myself up from the rock floor and lunge at Alistair, tackling him to the ground.

“Caspian! Catch!” Rory screams.

I look in her general direction, and she’s holding another vial of holy water, which she throws in my direction.

I cannot lose this. I need to focus. My reflexes are impaired, but if I concentrate, I can save us all.

Alistair picks himself up and swings his spectral sword one more time at me.

“And this time, stay down!” He screams.
